is January 9, 2010. A Saturday!
The issue is dedicated to Erol Otus and we will be interviewing him. See the appropriate thread if you would like to ask him questions!
Artists as well as authors are encouraged to submit their creative work. Oh, and if you do comics, please!

Is this thread an appropriate place to toss around ideas for submissions?
At Anonycon I ran an event using some of the awesome illustrations the esteemed Mr. Otus did as player handouts for the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan. I was thinking of posting these images on The Mule Abides along with a blog-post-length essay about how I found that having an evocative picture of the scene made it fun and easy to improvise a trap/puzzle encounter responding to player input. Questions:
1) Is this something that you'd like to see in FO! if I sketched the parts of my adventure that I used these illustrations to depict & diagrammed the way I used them, instead of re-drawing or reprinting the original copyright-TSR images?
2) Should I not make that a blog post so that FO! would be its first publication? (I'd be happy to do so for the chance to take advantage of the special EO issue.)

I'm still planning on my Gygaxian drop-in wilderness community.
I also would like to call dibs on a (Rob Conley's) Majestic Wilderlands review this go-around.
I may also have a few nautical odds and ends to throw in, not sure yet.

Hi Tavis!
That sounds like a neat article idea. My only concern about it would be that we probably can't re-publish those images which would make it hard for people to figure out what you're talking about. Since you're thinking of writing it up for your blog anyway why don't you do a rough draft of it for us to talk about and then if it doesn't work for the magazine you can just put it on your blog. Thanks for thinking of us!
Dibs called, Zach. We should be pretty good for reviews, I think we're also going to have one for Stonehell Dungeon and possibly one for Dragon Warriors, so that makes us good to go.

I'm thinking the illos for the article would be my own sketches, seen here alongside the original. This exercise indicates both that this process of remembering how I visualized the scene in the dungeon and then trying to draw that is different enough that it shouldn't qualify as a derivative work, and also that I should take more time to draw the sketches for the article so that I catch the little details that might have led the players to worry about things that they did not this time, steering the result of the encounter in a different direction.

An article about how to make simple sketches for your players to support the dungeon experience would be awesome. I think of the third or fourth sketch in S1 for example that has the raised box coming out of the wall - that's an easy one but it does illustrate the principle nicely, you say 'hey, what's that' and go check out the box.
A couple references to classics by Erol or others would be great but probably we shouldn't overdo it so people have a decent chance to figure out what we're talking about. Your making similar ones of your own that highlight the features I think is OK. Maybe even cropping small details as artistic quotations to demonstrate the principle, although only if that's worth doing.

Are materials for Mutant Future acceptable? I know there have been MF critters and Jeff's Slimy Lake sandbox. How about a full-scale adventure or some post-apoc tables?

MF stuff is very acceptable in general - we seem to have at least a little in every issue. Only way to know for sure is to send it along! Also, Erol thinks he may be doing a sci-fi themed cover for the issue, so that would make a nice tie-in as well.

Would you like me to write up more guilds/orders/organizations? I have a couple of ideas.
