Greyhawk follows the Tolkienesque model of medieval Northern Europe for the backdrop and flavor of its world as does most of the D&D settings, judging particularly by the artwork. So I have prettymuch thought of Blackmoor as having a fairly typical northern euorpean look too, especially given all the Scottish sounding place names. So, its a little surprising really when you take more than a passing glance a Arnesons' sketches in the FFC, to notice that the architecture of virtually every one, shows a very different style of buildings, much more in keeping with Spanish/Mexican/Western styles than the northern European style.

Maybe the 1977 edition has got more illustrations? In the 1980, I see what you mean with Castle Blackmoor door, but the mos striking feature are vikings's boats.

Its the 77 edition I'm looking at. The castle gate is one for sure, but also the town of Glendower - all flat roof adobe looking structures except for a spanish looking church and a thatch roof shed. Theres also a mexican/mayan looking doorway to Blackmoor dungeon (p44), and a Spanish carribean looking fort with slanted walls and triangular crenelatios on pp 16 & 41.

Oh yeah, then there is the infamous Temple of the Frog itself, shaped like a giant frog and having built in landing platforms for Roc (aka Tarn) riders.

Agreed for this one! The temple in the middle of the swamp and the city looks like Tenochtitlan!

The ’77 edition has Arneson’s drawings. Someone redrew them for the ’80 version. Unfortunately, they are not much better, and sometimes worse. And they’re not Arneson’s. So the ’77 edition is just better. (Also, the Blackmoor Dungeon maps are a full page per level, whereas they are shrunk down to 2 per page in the ’80 edition, which sucks.)

I understand better. Is that possible to get a few samples of the 1977 version? Is there any other variant, apart drawings and pagination?

I've noticed little things, like spelling corrections and changing pts. to points. Probably a few other minutea...
