I was reading through the Aventuras en la marca del este blog and I stumbled upon a game that I had read something about before, but I had never dived in, now I see that these guys want to play it and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this game. From the description on the website it sounds like a retro-clone of sorts, but I don't know much more about it. I registered on their forum, but it seems pretty quiet over there. www.perytonpublishing.com/perytonrpg.htm

I have a copy of this and it never seemed to grab me. Actually, I don't remember much about it, other than the fact that the description was more interesting to me than the actual book. I believe it is a d20 SRD basded game, but I don't think it's a clone of any of the early editions but instead more of a simplified 3E. It uses "knacks" sort of to replace "feats". I seem to recall that it was well done overall, but just that it didn't have any specific thing that made me want to play it over any other RPGs on my shelf.

Thank you for the reply. I see that a revised edition was released at GenCon and the people behind the game seem like a happy enough bunch, but I am just not sure. The description is very broad, and reviews are very scant. From their website:
"With the Peryton Fantasy Role-Playing Game, you can have the quick play and nostalgic familiarity of a retro game without the unwieldy inconsistencies of earlier systems. Alongside the best features of the original fantasy role-playing game, the Peryton RPG offers many innovations of its own, including an easy, intuitive experience system that encourages good role-playing and makes in-game events uniquely relevant to character development.
The Peryton RolePlaying game is built from Open Gaming mechanics and will be immediately familiar to experienced gamers. And thanks to its streamlined design, players new to role-playing will have no trouble jumping in and getting started quickly. It doesn't matter if you're a seasoned RPG fan or a random player whose best gaming experience is playing free online poker, the intuitive and interactive design will seamlessly immerse you in the game.
This revised edition of the Peryton Fantasy Roleplaying Game is a complete system with a full selection of classes, monsters, spells, and treasures, featuring both old favorites and new creations. It also includes an improvisation guide with all the material you need for several instant adventures. Add pencils, paper, dice, and a few friends and you’re ready to go!
More good reasons to buy this game:
Knacks and ability checks let you get started quickly and still evolve your character concept as you go. An advancement system that makes sense. The whole game comes in one book for $19.99. Easy to adapt to d20 supplements. An updated and expanded alchemy system that captures the flavor of the real thing without slowing down your game. Making magic items is an adventure in itself. This revised edtion is fully compatible with the original, but features new art, layout improvements, a lot of streamlining, and new material."
The first line makes it sound a bit simulacrum-esque, yet Knacks and the words "easily adapt to D20 supplements" sounds a bit off to me. It sounds a bit like Iron Gauntlets, the premise sounds neat, the application and actual book are a bit unwieldy. I might still buy it to peruse, but I am a bit stumped at how quiet their forum is. The website does say to ask if you have questions.

Ditto what Fin Said. I bought the lite version a while back. I never played it. The knacks were an interesting concept and there is a templar class that is kinda cool. The game itself though is really 3.5 lite as I understand it. Theres nothing retroclonish about it that I can see except the overal idea that simpler is better. The purpose stated in the version I have is that it could be bought and played in one evening as opposed to needing weeks to learn. I think its probably a decent RPG but not especially distinctive.

Thank you, aldarron, for the information. The "nostalgic familiarity of a retro game" line grabbed at me. I will still take the bite, I suppose, but I appreciate the input!

I saw a new edition in the game store today and thumbed through it. It didn't look that different from the one I own, but maybe I didn't look close enough to see the changes.

Well, I am planning on sending a few things to Noble Knight, including Cadwallon, if nobody on the Savage Worlds forum responds, so I can pick up the revised version without a sweat. I was wanting a spare vs. Monsters and they sold it, so I am looking at HARP and Peryton to read through.
