Well, I plan on giving the gift of Old School to some friends this year (I'm playing Secret Santa in several places). I think that I'm going to aim for PDFs of Books 1-3, plus Chainmail and Supplements 1 and 2 (I really am not a big fan of later supplements). Likewise, I bought several copies of In Search of Adventure earlier this year and think that would round out such a collection nicely (although it's technically for a later edition of D&D). What say you?

I think that this is a wonderful idea. If gamers get exposure to the early editions of the rules they're more likely to give them a shot. Giving away "secret Santa" stuff like this is brilliant!

I keep passing OD&D stuff out to my own kids (in the past) and now to my grandkids and my friends do likewise. We have always made it a birthday thing and a Christmas thing to do.

Secret Santa is always a good idea and with OD&D as the gift, it can't miss.

It ended up being the three rule books, Supplement 1, Holmes Basic D&D, and an OD&D record sheet PDF. Oh, and a somewhat subpar copy of Ptolus (I had to crop the cover and downsample the images due to inbox size issues).

Sounds good: did they like the gifts?

And it's gonna be an Old School Christmas for me, too. I just got a bunch of stuff on ebay, including several Judges Guild maps (and three blank maps! Woo hoo!)
Pity I won't actually receive it until after Christmas, but that's okay by me.

Wow, our first spammer!! Can I kill him now? Please?--I don't think "Guest" posting is such a great idea...

[glow=red,2,300]ZZZZZZZZap![/glow] Spammer? Where? ;D Thanks for the heads-up, oltekos! ADDITION: Okay, as a general update I found that most of the boards were set to allow "registered members" only to post, but I had missed the General boards since Proboards set those up for "guest" posting in the initial creation. Or maybe I was sloppy. Either way, I checked each board in the system and our shields should be up now. Now I kind of wish I hadn't zapped that spam mail -- I can't read Chinese (or whatever character set that was) but since it might be our only spammer ever it would have been nice to preserve for future generations.

Perhaps after Christmas everyone can share what, if anything, old school gaming related they received.

We hate spam, internet or in the can, both are vile! Ugh! Yuk! We have the suspicion that we are getting something D&D related for Christmas. Less than 48 hours and we'll find out.

It was a bot, judging by the open tags and the random user names.

It's already an old school Christmas here at Doc's house (not to be confused with a dock house, something totally different). My wife somehow got me a copy of the old TSR Empire of the Petal Throne!! Woo-hoo!! She dropped it off at my office at lunchtime, all wrapped up pretty and told me it was an early gift from the North Pole. I opened it up, kinda expecting it to be more of an X-mas gift than a Christmas gift (if ya get my meaning) and was shocked! Flabbergasted! Bamboozled! A near pristine version of a 70's old school game that I'd never been able to get my hands on! I was very happy indeed, and very appreciative. Now I just have to find the time to read it. Cait isn't at all fond of gaming, but she sure has connections Doc

Ah, you're a lucky man, Doc!
My lady is becoming fond of gaming, slowly, but she doesn't have any connections of that sort at all. (Still, we're happy together, and I guess that's what counts.)
Merry Christmas, everybody!

Merry Christmas!
I didn't actually get it for Christmas, but a cool old school item came in the mail for me today. It is a pristine (except the outer plastic case, which I don't care too much about) copy of Saga: Age of Heroes, a minigame by TSR (Steve Marsh), 1981.
Basically, you have a glossy paper map of Scandanavia divided into sectors like Frisia, Saxony, Trondheim, etc. (includes out of the way places like Ireland and Thule, too). Each territory is numbered (11-66) so that you can randomly generate starting locations, which you do for monsters, jarls (potential allies) and heroes (players). Heroes start with a magic sword (each is named with its own powers, drawn randomly). You then go around gaining glory in various ways, particularly by killing monsters (but also from recruiting jarls, defeating other heroes, and amassing wealth through taxation of lands that you conquer). At the end of turn 20, the hero with the most glory wins. It looks pretty cool. There are magic spells, magic runes, magical items, intervention by the gods, and a number of different types of monsters to deal with.

A bit of an "old school" Christmas for me, heh, due to me purchasing for . . me! I got the Best of Dragon vols I & II recently that I haven't started reading. And I just won a Shady Dragon Inn on eBay that'll be here soon. I've also been perusing WG6 Isle of the Ape for Greyhawk minutia/lore. Sheesh what a tough module ~ a DM's delight methinks!! ;D Happy Christmas to all! God Jul!

Not necessarily an Old School Christmas, but the missus got me not (1) Pound O' Dice, not (2) Pounds O' Dice, but a whopping (5) Pounds O' Dice!! (that's awesome; I somehow lost my almost all my dice when we moved a mere 20 mi. this past February). We also both got some disposable moolah from both our parents (it's shopping time!!).

I never get an "Old School Christmas" because none of my family or gaming group have a clue what to buy for me. I have so much already and my tastes are pretty particular, so they're stuck buying me socks and stuff like that.

They could get you a Noble Knight Games gift certificate!
(I'm just saying that because about half of my Old School Christmas is coming from them. The other half is from eBay.)
