I think most of you are probably on the TARGA list or read the blogs - but in case not, there's a really good discussion/movement going on with TARGA and making it relevant to those who want to get assistance in promoting OSR events/demos/games at cons/events/game stores. The wiki is getting updated, the TARGA website has a bit more going on now. If you're on the email list, please join in the discussion! The TARGA website is: www.traditionalgaming.orgI feel kinda funny posting links to the discussion, as it's on the S&W forums and that just feels like bad form linking them, but if you go to my blog, Sunday's post has a link to the relevant thread. The basic premise to the changes is this: TARGA will attempt to coordinate and provide help/resources to those who want to organize events. We're going to do this at a regional level. So if you're someone who wants to do events for say, NYC, you would become the Regional Coordinator. You would work with the TARGA sponsor coordinator who can hook you up with sponsoring partners who may give you adventures/settings/books to run, or as prizes - and perhaps help you cover costs of printing fliers, banners and what not - and you'll help them as well with exposure and perhaps some booth time or setup/takedown help? That's the idea in a nutshell. This is all being discussed, but since I like the open source/crowd source approach to things, I wanted to put this out here. Chgowiz

I'm interested in doing this, but find the TARGA website intimidating. How do I sign up?

I think the current sign up is to the discussion group via Yahoo TARGATalk. Basically you need a Yahoo identification and then just apply via the join button. You might have to wait until an administrator confirms, as with a forum, not sure about that. At the minute discussion as to establishing regional and local chapters is afoot, and as Chgowiz says, you can jump straight into the discussion at Swords & Wizardry (assuming that you are signed up there). Sounds like a lot of red tape, but it shouldn't be. That reminds me, the TARGA blog needs updating to congratulate Mythmere Games on winning a Silver ENnie. [edit] Ah, Chgowiz is ahead of me on that score! Good stuff1

I really believe that Chgowiz is exactly what we have needed for TARGA and I really like the new direction.
Hopefully we can get something going on the .org site with a wall or messageboard so that people do not feel as if they MUST join Yahoo. At the time when we began getting people together it seemed the easiest way to operate, but I am not adverse to something that is not Yahoo based at all.
Chgowiz, I am really, really glad that you put your thoughts down for us to see and have a clear outlook for TARGA.
This, I believe, is the beauty of this organization and has been from the start. It is not only very grassroots, it is also open to ideas from everyone.

I thought TARGA was a great idea from the start and was sad that it seemed to fall by the wayside. Glad to see it making a comeback, I hope people make use of it to help the OSR grow.

Chgowiz, it might be worthwhile having you make a generic post that explains a little more about what TARGA is. It occurs to me that a casual poster might not follow links or take the time to figure it out.

I'm interested in doing this, but find the TARGA website intimidating. How do I sign up? yea, it's a bit sparse - I'm trying to dump a lot of brain into it right now. I should probably update the front page to say something about the email list...

It occurs to me that a casual poster might not follow links or take the time to figure it out. That's a great idea - once we figure it out, I think Zach is going to do some PR work on the various forums and whatnot. Right now, my goal is to make an organization that facilitates the playing of older edition, traditional roleplaying games. That means helping set up demos/events/games at cons/events/gamestores. That means linking together the organizers with materials/help and possibly sponsorship from interested/friendly publishers/retailers. That means providing adventures, rules and other helpful info, plus maybe an experienced old-schooler to help out. That means the organizer possibly helping out the sponsor(s) at the event/con. I should write that down.

I should write that down. You did! :-) And it's a wonderful Manifesto!
