I saw both of those and wondered about them.
#1 - I hadn't caught the date he claimed he bought them, but the starburst is clearly on the box so it can't be from 1975.
#2 - Boxed set without a box isn't worth so much. Heck, the picture is so faded that my first thought was that he had printed his own books on cardstock.

I actually messaged #2 to tell him there was no way he was getting the $1200 he'd asked for originally; the price as of today is down to $100/$200. Still WAY too high for a 6th print sans box, but not so blind as the original.

I guess I sit in a good place - No Credit Cards.
And since those 535 Honorable (0 Level Humans?/70th Level Politicians) Members of that White Building in the Village of DC control my paycheck, I never have enough money to purchase anything on-line.

I've always been pretty wary of using ebay myself. I know a lot of people use them, but I've heard a good deal of horror stories about them, too. I prefer to go through amazon bookseller, abe's books, the hero factory, etc.
Sure, the frequency of locating a brown or white box is a lot less frequent with those sites I listed, but they all have had them (and all more than once).

I have been taken a few times on ebay with the descriptions of things not being what they were claimed to be. One thing that strikes me odd about the pictures is the consistent discoloing and the perfect staples on the three LBBs. My volume three is a bit lighter and the staples are shaky, which leads me to believe that it could be printed pdfs put into an old box. Maybe not, but I bet that I could go to Michael's craft store and buy the same type of paper for the outer covers for about $2 and find an original box for around $5 somewhere.
Maybe not and I could be absolutely wrong, I am often enough, but that is a pretty slick set and if I had that for sale (which I wouldn't) I also wouldn't drop the price.

I've been dealing with eBay vendors ~5 years and I've never been cheated or misled. I guess I'm a lucky SOB.

I've been dealing with eBay vendors ~5 years and I've never been cheated or misled. I guess I'm a lucky SOB. You are lucky. I have gone to buy replacement copies of modules or books and received material in much worse condition than what I already had. The same has happened to me buying D&D books and modules from AbeBooks.

Same here. No problems whatsoever. eBay and Amazon. Almost certainly thousands of purchases over the years on both and one time I had a guy accidently send me a CD that was different from the one I ordered. That's the only problem I remember. Besides, I get stuff so much cheaper from eBay and Amazon. Had I not used the two of those services, there no tellin' how much money I'd have wasted on the likes of Noble Knight (of course, NK is all kinds of awesome, mind) and Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, etc. I cringe when I think of the things I bought from places that weren't eBay and Amazon...

I've had a few hiccups, but it's always been in bulk purchases - wrong module booklet in the wrong cover, missing inserts, that sort of thing. I don't think it's ever been intentional, just slack on the part of the sellers who didn't take the time to make sure everything was correct and complete.
