For years I have wondered why rangers were designed to have magic-user spells. The class is very clearly based on Aragorn, right down to being able to use scrying devices because Aragorn used the palantir. But it occurred to me today that the class is not so much based on Aragorn but rather on all Numenoreans. Well, one Numenorean was the Mouth of Sauron, and he was described as a sorcerer. So maybe giving rangers m-u spells was to model him as well.
I kinda wish the Mouth had a bigger part in the series.
