Ever since I started collecting OD&D stuff, I've been itching to give Chainmail a try. Generally I'm not a miniatures kind of guy...mostly because my friends tend to be more strategically minded than I, so it's tough to ever win a game, but more because of the expense of getting into it.
Now, my friends are always riding me about never wanting to play minis games with them, so you'd think when I find one I'm interested in playing, they'd be all about giving it a shot. But nope; none have showed the slightest interest in the old-school (a fact with which I suffer greatly).
Yesterday I was registering for events at Gen Con and lo and behold I come across "Chainmail (original): Angmar Awakens - Middle Earth Second Age."
I've purchased my ticket and am inordinately excited at the chance to actually PLAY Chainmail!

I hope this is as much fun for you as "Chainmail" was for me back in the late 70's. It was the first set of 'ancient/medieval" rules I ever used. I found the mass battle system to be a very good one, and once you adjust to the man-to-man system, it is great for things like duels, or small "three musketeer" actions.

I'm really looking forward to it. I just hope enough people sign up to play!

Looks like I may not get to play after all. 4 days into registration and I'm still the only person who's bought a ticket for the event.

Hey, Jay. If I can make it to GenCon, I sure want to play Chainmail with you. My schedule for the summer is up in the air, though.

If you end up getting a badge, I'll give you the event number--but if he doesn't sell at least 8 tickets before the con, they might cancel the event.

If it is that rigid, I likely never will go. I've been to plenty of HMGS conventions and have never heard of someone not setting up the game because they did not get enough pre-registered folks! Of course, you are free to play anything you want if there is an opening at an HMGS con. You only pay the door charge to get in. Gen Con has Door charge and game charge?

Well, if there's not enough people to play, there's not enough people to play.

But there are no walk-ups at GenCon? You have to pre-reg?

Oh, there are generic tickets, but they don't expect someone to waste six hours of their day just in case 8 people (in this case--his minimum) randomly show up to play a game for which nobody's registered.
If they don't get the minimum, they often (though not always) cancel the event, assuming there isn't enough interest. Generics are good for when they have the minimum, but not the max.

No, sadly my budget and vacation time allow me exactly one con a year...and that's Gen Con. Some day when I am independently wealthy I will spend all my time at various conventions
