This arrived in the mail on Saturday, and I read it before falling asleep late that night. It was a very fun (albeit in places disturbing) read! I'd certainly be happy to read more of Cal's fiction in the future.
The style reminded me quite a bit of Jack Vance's Dying Earth stories and, even more so, Gene Wolfe's Urth of the New Sun tales.
Since I was pretty sleepy towards the end, I can't remember if the ultimate fate of Cassander was ever revealed. I assumed that he died. Was he perhaps transformed into that ape creature?

I'm glad you liked it. In the perhaps unlikely event that I ever become successful in something besides old-school gaming you now have blackmail material though.
It's dangerous for authors to say what really happened in their work but...hmmm. I'd better check the published version again before I say anything else.
