TARGA’s first initiative is International Traditional Adventure Roleplaying Week, January 10th through 17th, 2009. We are challenging you, ourselves, and old school referees everywhere to find a game store, contact the owner or manager, and arrange a demo of your favorite old school game or retro-clone. Or invite some friends (gamers and/or newbies) to your home for a one-shot adventure. We need to get people playing! Organizing discussion for International Traditional Adventure Roleplaying Week is underway at TARGATalk with additional support available as soon as our web presence grows. We hope you’ll join us in this exciting new endeavor!

It's time for a roll call for International Traditional Roleplaying Week - January 10th-17th, 2009. As El Presidente de por Vida Jeff Rients put it: "We are challenging you, ourselves, and old school referees everywhere to find a game store, contact the owner or manager, and arrange a demo of your favorite old school game or retro-clone. Or invite some friends (gamers and/or newbies) to your home for a one-shot adventure. We need to get people playing!"

Who: Aaron Kesher When: Sunday, January 18th What: ODD, White Box, 3LBB, whatever you want to call it. Where: The Source Comics and Games, technically in Falcon Heights, but I always think of it as St. Paul, MN, from 12-4. How: Forum postings, email, phone calls! Also, I'll be advertising TARGA at the table and inviting anyone who shows an interest to sit down and play, even mid-adventure.
I know, I know, it's a day late, but better late than never, as Grandma Kesher always used to say...
We'll be making characters on the spot and tilting at Mr. James Maliszewski's The Ruined Monastery. I'm sincerely hoping that this will be the beginning of a particular type of ongoing campaign, which I'm metaphorizing in my head as the Sandbox Empire. More on that later.
Any local boys and girls, PM me if you're interested, either for Sunday or for dates to follow. Or, you know, just show up...

Spike and I will be running a Swords and Wizardry dungeon crawl for beginners at Hobbytown USA in Kennesaw, Ga. this Sunday, Jan. 18th, from 1-5PM. We will also have free 25mm Reaper minis, and paint, so that you can paint a character before testing the dungeon.

Not F2F or anything, but I've kicked off an online Dungeons & Dragons game at Dragonsfoot, set to begin in a couple of days after a couple more players can suckered into it.
I tried and tried to get my old group back together for just one game, but work schedules wouldn't have any of it.

I had a blast as well, and it was great to have you there backing up the oldskool! I'll do write-up of the session soon, but suffice it to say that, at noon we had two confirmed players; by 1:00 we were going full bore with eight! We almost needed a Caller... I'd also like to thank James Maliszewski for The Ruined Monastery---a pitch-perfect first level dungeon! Well done! And the expansion of level 2 has already begun...

Spike and I had two young teens turn out to paint a mini, then try out the combat system from Swords and Wizardry. I gave them each a character sheet and a d6 and d20, so they could continue the fight at home. When their dad picked them up, he took a card with the web address for S&W. The lads said they would bring some friends next Sunday and try a full dungeon crawl.
Wish me luck!

Good luck, and that's totally cool that you not only did the mini painting thing, but you gave them dice to take home! You are thus Exalted! Also, here's the photo album from our ITARW adventure: PhotosI'm the guy doing all the talking, and coffee, of this boards fame, is the distinguished gentleman with beard and glasses, sitting two places to my left...

I just saw a post on DF where Frank Mentzer is running a 1Eish game in Rockford. *3 year* commitment. Wow. Wish I was closer than 90 min away from Rockford.

Yeah, that's pretty hardcore. What's crazy is that he'll actually get players. I would get nothing but laughs if I declared to the world that I wanted a 3 year commitment to my AD&D game!

....and my husband is trying to come up with an excuse to move from Georgia to Ohio. So...let's see a show of hands for who all thinks next year's "week" should be expanded to a month. It looks like a great turnout of participants. I'm also happy to see the various old-school groups popping up on sites such as Facebook. This in my opinion could be huge in bringing classic-style gamers like us out of the woodwork and starting up even more local face-to-face gaming groups.
