Aron Clark was asking me about the surroundings of the megadungeon and this is what I told him:
In my campaign it's at the southwest end of the Kingdom of Ilthar, near the city of Marchand, a city with forbidding stone walls and tin mines for high quality bronze. It's in a kind of wasteland area that abuts the Hand of Surrotram, a geological feature left behind by a vanquished Shadowlord. The Jagged Plinths are not that far from the road up into the mountains (and Marchand) from Altarran, a city of the plains below. There are some dungeon-city connections, especially in levels 5 and 6, that would go to Marchand or a city in the world of the person running it. So it's in a hilly/mountain rubble south of an important but dangerous trade road between two cities.
The random encounter table for the road would have merchant caravans, patrols from Marchand, occasional troll raiders, bandits, and then normal broken terrain/hill/rubble encounters with a slightly increased chance of bigger eviler creatures due to the multiple dark presences nearby (the active ones from the megadungeon and the ancient lingering ones from the Hand of Surrotram farther south). When I write them they will anyway. But you can put it where you want in your world!
Food for your own creative interpretations perhaps.
