I found this on Facebook, posted on "Dungeon Craft" and thought it would be worth a share here.
Kind of makes me want to run some sort of "free style" magic system to make use of this stuff.
Just went through a book of 'Grimm's Fairytales' and made some interesting observations. Could help add flavor to your game or just give you a chuckle.
-A spell using a drop of someone's blood in a given location to imitate their voice for one phrase one time.
-A cloak that teleports anyone under it.
-A sword that decapitates all enemies with the phrase, "heads off."
-A bird heart that (when put under your pillow) will produce a gold coin each morning.
-A dream told a character to find a flower with a dew drop that could undo magic and keep a witch 2 yards away.
-Counter Spell, but it only softens the effect instead of cancelling it.
-Clubs are pretty common, maybe more than swords. One in particular was magic and could smash a gate.
-Boots that travel a mile per a stride.
-One witch sees for miles, one was nearly blind.
-Eating white snake to talk to animals for the evening. Another character spent a year to learn each language for dogs, birds, etc.
-Most stories have talking animals. (Making the white snake and learning languages moot).
-Lots of polymorph, especially as a curse. The Beast and his underlings are lions, not furniture. To turn a fox back into a prince, he had to have his head and feet cut off.
-Most summoning or conjuring spells involve a song. Ashenputtle(Cinderella) could apparently conjure up outfits by herself.
-One of the 7 dwarves was taller than Snow Drop.
-In one story, dwarf and mannequin are used interchangeably. In another, dwarf and hobgoblin.
-Snow White is not Snow Drop. Snow White has a sister named Rose Red.
-Apparently you can cut wolves open and sew them up without waking them. At least 2 swallow food whole like a snake.
-There are way too many giants and royal families to have a shared universe among all stories.
-The talking sausage was out collecting fire wood, but was eaten for having false credentials.
