I've been getting ads for a "D&D Cheat Sheet" on my phone and on facebook. It's 5E, so most here might not be interested, but I'm a little curious about the thing. It's by a company called Armor Class. I hate to even give a link, because this seems like not a great deal at all. armorclass.co/Looks like a two page cheat sheet is $10. For two pages? Some of the ads offer 20% off and some mention you get 13 free character sheets (a bundle, one for each class, regularly $65) so that's still $8 for a two-page thing. Says "trusted by 10,000+" so can they have made $100,000 on this thing? At least those are actual pieces of paper. They are also selling $5 character sheets in PDF. I have to say, if this is the future of the hobby I should get onboard. Or is there something really cool that I have missed somehow? My father used to tell me about the "$5,000 orange" where he said he wouldn't sell many, but if he could just sell one he would be rich.

Hmm. Maybe I'll code a dice-roller and start a subscription service. 0.10USD per roll. If you make it a 0.25USD, the script will give you a "good" roll. 😆
Be sure to review and subscribe!

That's awesome! I might be tempted to subscribe to that, if only I didn't like my physical dice so much more than virtual ones.

I feel sad for someone that needs a cheat sheet for 5e. It's NOT that complicated a system. And the "DM cheat sheet?" Isn't that just...wait for it...a DM SCREEN?
I will say their character sheets look pretty cool. Though $5 for a 2-page PDF character sheet seems high. I'd pay $5, or maybe even $10, if all their sheets were bundled together into one file, but not $5 each per class. Hell, I have 14-page PDF character journals for 5e on DTRPG and I don't charge that much for them. I charge $1.39.

I would (and have) paid those sorts of numbers for simple low page-count products. It's like they have noobs in a bullseye and are hoping to snare them before they realize what prices things ought to go for. And their ads show folks who are confused by the terminology -- I can see that in a total noob, since dice types can confuse folks as well as some of the wording. Gamers are good at speaking in code, and some of them like confusing the muggles. I think it makes some people feel superior when others don't know what they are talking about.

Gamers are good at speaking in code, and some of them like confusing the muggles. I think it makes some people feel superior when others don't know what they are talking about. Spot on, Sir. Especially among the older "grognard" set, we tend to guard gaming like it's something that belongs to us and nobody else. We complain when the younger set wants to sweep us aside, but we also do everything we can to be inaccessible and dismissive to them, because we revel in the sense that we are the unappreciated scholars. I've had too many unpleasant run-ins with both sides of the spectrum lately and I often just wish it would all go away so we can just play games together. But that's another story entirely and perhaps treading too close to unacceptable territory for these forums. I think your observations are right there. They're targeting/exploiting new gamers who are confused by the lack of clarity they get from the experienced set.

My father used to tell me about the "$5,000 orange" where he said he wouldn't sell many, but if he could just sell one he would be rich. What they are doing is a borderline ripoff. Selling cheat sheets is not the issue, selling two pages is for $10 is. For one thing there can't be much thought behind the sheets themselves. Something I have experience as I did create and sell Quick Reference Cards Swords & Wizardry (32 pages) www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/337548/quick-reference-cards-for-swords-wizardryMy Majestic Fantasy RPG (20 pages) www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/333354/majestic-fantasy-rpg-basic-rules-reference-cardsAnd both are sold for $4. And the point of the cards is to allow a group people to quickly generate characters within 20 minutes. Something I playtested for a couple of years at convention games.

BTW, thank you for making these. I got them a long time ago and they've been very useful.

Saw another ad from the same group, this time for their DM pages. I think they were adding in a set of free dice if you buy their DM package. So, basically buy dice and they throw in the DM screen.

I'm not smart enough to play 5e without reference sheets. I doubt that's really true. I used to run OD&D with just the "reference sheets" and later just the Judges Guild DM screen, so I get where you are coming from, but mostly I don't use anything but the module when I run a game. Well, that and the Monster Manual. Actually, DM screens today have very little value for me. The old Judges Guild screen had combat charts and saving throws and lists of monster data, but a lot of that information has become obsolete. Combat charts replaced by an equation, saving throws are all stat-based on the character sheet, monster info is too lengthy to fit on a screen, one side of the screen is now filled with artwork. I like to keep my notes behind a screen, but I don't look up stuff off of the screen like I used to.

Every 5e DM screen I have or one that I've seen (they released 3, maybe 4 so far) has none of the information that anyone who still plays AD&D, BX, or any clone would consider useful, so a 2 page reference sheet for 5e is needed. But not at $10.
There are free JPGs & PDFs of reference sheets & DM screens that DO have relevant info available that you can print out for a fraction of $10.
