In AD&D a polymorph self spell can transform the caster into something as small as a wren or as large as a hippopotamus. There could be a caster out there who would only use the spell to turn into a wren or a hippopotamus. That's a hardcore approach!

What I still find most impressive is the fact that the caster can change their form within 1 round (AD&D 2E; or 5 segments in AD&D 1E). I remember a quite interesting approach of our group back in the day, when the polymorphed caster would fly over a bandit camp, then change form to a hippo right above their leader, falling down and crushing him, then turning into a bird again and fly off. The group's fighters used the horror and confusion to attack the camp.
