I played the module “Day of the Octopus” (1984, Bruce Nesmith) from TSR’s Marvel Super Heroes RPG, and had a blast! I’ve never so much as dipped my toe into superhero comic books, but now I’ve kind of got an itch. The module features the Thing, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Captain Marvel, so I figured I’d start with these collections: The Fantastic Four #1-18 www.amazon.com/dp/1302931547The Amazing Spider-Man #1-17 www.amazon.com/dp/1302946854Tales of Suspense #58-96 www.amazon.com/dp/1302928236The Avengers #227-235 www.amazon.com/dp/1302933280I’m kind of stoked!

Those are some excellent Silver Age collections (with the exception of the Avengers), I hope you dig them! The Silver Age had a certain hopeful vision that still inspires me.

As your reach the 1970s Marvel stories, don't hesitate to dip into their monster/horror books like Tomb of Dracula, Werewolf by Night, Ghost Rider, etc. Good, spooky stuff, with the occasional cross-over with the more mainstream Marvel heroes--like the time Dracula battled the Silver Surfer!

I don’t plan to read any more beyond the four collections I selected, but we’ll see!

I have always had a love-hate relationship wtih superhero comics. I wanted to like them but could never bring myself to actually like them. However, it turns out that the Silver Age, give or take a decade, is what I always imagined comics to be, and they finally made me a true believer (I still don't really care for superhero comics after the 70s though, or most any comics from the 90s onward with a few specific exceptions). Anyway, I think you'll really enjoy the early Fantastic Four and Spider-Man issues. I need to read Captain America, myself. If you get the hankering to read more, look up Strange Tales issues 110–129 and issues 130–146 for some good Dr. Strange weirdness.

Big +1 on the Dr. Strange recommendation!

I also prefer the Epic Collection format in general.

My favorite Marvel Comics are those with the Man-Thing in 1971-75, especially those drawn by Mike Ploog in 1974.

I was against the idea at first, but I recently got the marvel app to read some old comics, and while I would rather be reading actual paper copies, it’s not too bad on my phone or iPad, and I’m able to read some older titles that are harder to come by.
