Never heard that story. As Spock might say, “Fascinating.”
RIP, Mr. Lenat!

Ah Traveller, my guilty pleasure. Haven't played in ages and never been able to find a face-to-face game in my local area more's the pity. Sad to hear another "old-schooler" who had many influences on the hobby and life has left us.

Sad to hear another "old-schooler" who had many influences on the hobby and life has left us. Still a ton of Traveller being played, including online! I'm running a mashup of the 1978/2003 Battlestar Galactica universes using the 1977 (original) Traveller rules as a foundation with a number of changes to fit the setting.

I'm not a fan of the online thing so that is out for me. I've plenty of face-to-face opportunity but I'm in the situation where no one else wants to game master so if I wanted to play Traveller I'd have to run it. I don't want to run it, I want to play it ;-)

I don't want to run it, I want to play it ;-) It’s not quite the same, but classic Traveller does have a built-in way to solo play, via the trade charts. Give yourself a Free Trader, roll up/make up a crew, and pick a location to start from (I suggest using the awesome Travellermap.com ), or roll up some system UFPs randomly. Roll to see what cargo types are available. Stock your hold, then fly off to a neighboring system where you think you can turn a profit. Use the encounter charts for the flight and just imagine what happens. Gradually payoff and upgrade your ship. No, you won’t be investigating much, or engaging in firefights, but you can Firefly yourself all over the galaxy… and you can even try the odd bit of smuggling. Do the jobs, keep flyin’! Not long ago I was jonesing for some Traveller, so I created the Artemis and her (all female) crew, and tracked her adventures around Jewel in the area of the Spinward Marches. Made a little logbook, and noted events that happened which fit the makeup of the crew (including one Psionic who wasn’t aware of her abilities, but had precognitive “guesses” that explained unusually positive rolls.) It was fun just imagining what happened. If you try it with friends, you might find one of them becomes inspired to take over as a GM. (Heck, point ‘em at the aforementioned map site…)

I'd jump on that offer in a New York minute, if I weren't located in NY! Thank you for the kind offer.
