Upping your game as a DM

I picked up Bill Webb's Book of Dirty Tricks, Book of Dirty Tricks 2, and Book of Dirty Tricks 3 over at Frog God Games. Great purchase chock full of advice for DMs.

I can only vouch for the first book. The second is a bunch of event cards, which would be okay, but it's only available pdf.

I'm interested in that book as well. Game, I ran a session tonight where the party actually knew real fear. Not easily arrived at, but they were down on hit points and surrounded by rooms full of undead with no uncontested path out. Everyone, DM included could feel that a TPK was a real possibility. I had mixed feelings about that as I've put a lot of exploratory work into the campaign setting and milieu. I decided on my end that the risk involved of early campaign termination is nothing but a queer feeling, which elicits a call for even more detail in the campaign. Got to love this game, and especially the possibility of getting better at it, both for the DM and the players. In the end, the TPK was avoided, but the party now knows that huecuvas can polymorph self up to 3 times a day; i.e., here comes a hippopotamus in the dungeon (or 10 of them), crashing through barricaded doors!
