With Guardians we tried to create a superhero roleplaying game that was as close to OD&D + GH + EW as possible, then build from there. The significant changes were ascending AC over descending, and ability based saving throws (piggybacking off the great Swords & Wizardry system, but enhancing it with adding ability score modifier based on circumstance - this turned out to work well for a superhero RPG). Plus some additional mechanics to make it superheroic. So the game has done well since 2016, nearly rivaling Warriors of the Red Planet in sales. But it has been in need of a book of NPC's, and is finally getting one! The Bruiser's Handbook features 20 super villains & heroes, new Bruiser class abilities, and 100 superhero adventure hooks. If you want to know what OD&D would have been like had Gary and Dave chosen to make a superhero game instead of a swords & sorcery game, it may not have been exactly Guardians, but maybe it could have been.
