I saw the movie on an IMAX screen with the family yesterday & enjoyed it as much as any of the various Marvel movies, which is to say, much better than I would have predicted. Tonally, it is very similar to a Guardians of the Galaxy movie in its mix of humor and action.

Enjoyed the film. Interesting developments regards villainous opportunity and the role of adventurers when venality and thievery beset a realm. That is, the red wizard has no civil role in an upright city and a horrid one, otherwise.

I finally saw the movie last night. It was good, not great. I felt the first half dragged a lot. About half the jokes made me laugh, the others got a smirk out of me. The second half was fire, though!
It was Guardians of the Galaxy-esque, but not quite as polished. I would not pay to see it again, but I'd watch it on streaming.

Unfortunately I've been sick the last couple days and I had to cancel the tix for the show last night. Will have to wait for it to hit streaming services, as yesterday was the last day it was showing in my lovely local theatre (makes me wonder how well it's doing- they have 15 screens and it's been less than a week). It's still showing at 2 other malls in the metro area, but both are in questionable areas with a fair amount of crime- one or the other hits the local news every week for something (including stabbings and shootings). Don't need to see it that bad

Tonal comparisons to guardians of the galaxy really seals the deal that this is not a movie I need to see.

My wife and I saw this yesterday. She's not a gamer, but she enjoyed the movie on its own terms. Despite my very negative reaction when I saw the first trailer for this, I enjoyed it also. A bit longer than it really needed to be, but it was a fun and mostly light-hearted fantasy movie. I did find it a bit ironic that despite the subtitle of "Honor Among Thieves," there were no Thieves in the heroes' party--a Bard (renamed), a Fighter, a Druid and a Magic-User, but no Thief. I guess Hugh Grant was the token Thief.

Don't need to see it that bad Honor Among Thieves is definately a movie you could skip seeing at the theater, if the only reason you bought tickets was for the presentation. I actually enjoyed the experience of seeing it with a large audience; and hearing their reactions to different d&d references and in-jokes. Also, I find it cathartic to laugh, or cry, or jump out out of my seat in fright with a group of like-minded fans. For that, I wish I had gone sooner, maybe on opening night, to watch it with the real diehards

It's been tough for me the last several years between Hollywood turning to complete garbage and the pandemic on top of that. I'd much prefer to experience anything in the theatre, but doesn't look to be in the cards for this.

My daughter and I saw the D&D movie today. Our favorite character was Sofina, and my second was the paladin.

We saw Honor Among Thieves on Saturday night. Overall I liked it. Seeing Neverwinter on the big screen was actually a "wow" moment for me. I've run games in the city and played the old Neverwinter Nights game so it was really cool to see it realized well. The Sword Coast is covered in extreme detail by now but the movie really worked to make it good. There were even a couple of moments that worked according to game rules: An obvious one was the attunement sequence, but I liked a subtler moment when Doric uses her sling to shoot what looked like a bulb of garlic at Sofina in the final fight to break concentration on her spell. I like heist stories and I think that it was a pretty natural way to do a D&D film. My wife and daughter really enjoyed Themberchaud - it was a really fun way to work a particular dragon into the movie without having it be a repeat of Smaug from the Hobbit. In a sense I think it was the first big fantasy film that used some of the visual language from Peter Jackson's movies in fresh and interesting ways. It was a good way to make a movie that works as a movie but feels like it could've been adapted from a D&D adventure.

Professor Dungeonmaster gave the D&D movie a brutal review and argues that it was the worst flop of the year, comparing it to Shazam:FotG
Let's take a look: Shazam: $123 million worldwide against a production budget of $125 million. It had a first week drop of -79.7% D&D: $124 million worldwide against a production budget of $151 million. It had a first week drop of -68.1%
Take into account Shazam has been out a week longer, the domestic comparison at the same point was Shazam: $46,621,501 vs. D&D: $62,277,540. So the D&D movie was about 25% more at the same point.
Supposedly a movie has to make back twice its budget to be profitable, because theaters take their cut, and marketing a film costs a lot. So they both appear to be a loss. However studios have lots of ways of squeezing every penny out of a movie, and they use sneaky accounting so they can avoid paying royalties on profit.
I think there is a lot of bias, I'm guessing what he wanted was a Grimdark movie, not a Funlight movie. More Lord of the Rings (but darker), less Guardians of the Galaxy.

I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thinking I should go see it again with the grandkids. They'll get a kick out of it.
I enjoyed the many, many Easter Eggs, some pretty well hidden.
And if anyone wants to understand the abstract nature of old-school/OD&D combat vs. the newer move-by-move methodology that I feel like is in newer editions, watching some of the battle sequences really makes that apparent.

Yes, the combat between the party and the red wizard was particularly interesting (maybe the best part of the film), what with its initiative, bobbing and weaving, taking and delivering damage, and with casualties.

No matter how serious you try to play D&D, someone turns it into either Guardians of the Galaxy (at best) or Monty Python's Holy Grail. Honestly, I think that's why most comedy wannabe RPGs are so meh. (For example, Hackmaster. Cool concept, but terrible rules bloat and their parody just couldn't sustain the funny.) Straight RPGs can be played straight or comedic. Comedic RPGs just seem strained. Players are always a lot more funny (sometimes by accident) than comedic RPGs, IMO.

I've also had a good time playing the Ghostbusters RPG comedically. But in the realm of D&D games, yeah, comedy is inherent in the game depending on how it is played anyways.

It's interesting to me that some message boards seem to roast the movie, others love it. I suppose different boards have different demographics of humans, but still ... good is good.

I suspect that the difference in response is based on a number of things, including preferred playing style, adherence to “realism” vs. willingness to be silly, attitude about modern editions, attitude towards Wizards of the Coast and/or Hasbro, attitude towards Hollywood, preferred form of “fantasy” in genre, literature and film, attitude towards CGI, attitude towards comedy in films, and so forth. The less this film connects with one’s attitudes, the less it will be praised (and the more it will be condemned), and vice versa. And that goes in all directions.
Personally, I expect I will enjoy the film, because I get the impression it will connect with at least some of my own attitudes positively, even if not on all of them.

There is a middle ground between A) a masterful film and B) a boring movie, and it even has a name: The Popcorn Movie! You know, a lazy afternoon in which you are casting about for something to do (and may God grant us all a lot more of such afternoons!), and you kind of have the munchies. "Hey, I know! Let's go get some popcorn at the matinee!" So you show up at the theater and scan your options: "Let's see... Huh. A Dungeons & Dragons movie. Let's give that a try." Then you buy your popcorn and sit in the theater and wait to watch the show. Your feet are up, you're enjoying your popcorn, and the movie is reasonably diverting and fun. Two hours later you walk out, having had a pretty good time. Nothing life-changing or memorable, but it made you laugh and gave you a pleasant couple of hours. That. That is what this D&D film is.

Welp, saw it with the family.
It lived up to my expectations...which were very low. I had some glimmer of hope based on some comments here and elsewhere, but it reminded me of a professional baseball game- 30 minutes of excitement broken up in several hours of complete boredom.
The movie needed a serious editing job as it dragged on in various spots and I found myself watching other people in the theatre ( and I don't have attention issues). The last battle scene and the earlier "szass tamm "scene were enjoyable as was Hugh Grant. Wife enjoyed bits of the humor (especially Hugh Grant, as she's a fan) , as did my Daughter- I don't think the movie stoked their interest in the game in any way whatsoever. Though I have not seen it, they both said the recent Shazam movie was far better (?).
Was nice to be in the theatre though after a couple years. Movie Theatre popcorn is hard to beat.
Getting back to the earlier rating system. For me all LOTR (extended) movies are 5s. Prequel Star Wars 2-3, Hobbits about the same, maybe less than the prequels. This gets a 1.5-2 from me.

I went to see it with my entire face-to-face gaming group, and we had a fantastic time. I'm not really a Forgotten Realms fan, but in college one of the referees in our group always ran games there, so it was cool to see Neverwinter on screen.

My wife and I attended a showing and had a nice time.
I had not intended to go but she expressed interest so I said "Why not?"
The opening fell flat with me a little but after that it picked up and I think it's an entertaining film with many decent highlights.
The setting is mostly unknown to me, but I thought most of the gags were good and they didn't overdo the CGI, which I was expecting.
I think it's a pretty stand up movie and quite fun.
