I dislike all of the TSR logos that followed Greg Bell's lizard man--beginning with the little wizard and going downhill from there. That little lizard man has heart and soul!
I knew that it was sometime in 1978 that the little wizard replaced the lizard man, since some 1978 publications (such as modules G1, G2, and G3) had the lizard man, while others (such as modules D1, D2, and D3) had the wizard. But could I nail that change-over with more precision?
I flipped through some old issues of The Dragon, and voila! The last issue to include TSR ads that had the lizard man was #16 (July 1978), and the first issue to include TSR ads that had the little wizard was #17 (August 1978).
So there we have it: The lizard man reigned through July 1978, only to be supplanted by the wizard in August 1978.

Hear, Hear! That was a great logo.

You kids with your new-fangled lizardmen logos. Give me a good old-fashioned GK!

Judges Guild had that same issue with the pegasus and rider. I bought the First Fantasy Campaign with the super-sized JG logo on front and it felt like I was staring into one of those magic eye books. You'll notice that they chose to fill in the lizard man for that comparison that Vile just posted. Agreed, though, that the lizard man is best. What do you think of the Dave Sutherland edition of lizard man?

What do you think of the Dave Sutherland edition of lizard man? While I think that Sutherland's lizard man is good, I prefer the rough look of Bell's lizard man.

I have a few tattoos but not a D&D one. I've often considered getting one and long ago decided if I did so, it would be the lizardman logo.

The lizard man is also present on the DM screen done by Tramp. I've gotten the impression that the lizard man was a major monster-antagonist in old campaigns -- perhaps on par with if not greater than orcs, goblins and the like.

A classic antagonist from the Sword & Sorcery genre, I'd say. I'd guess they might have been even more widely-known than than orcs and goblins?

Today I learned that my 1st print Holmes book has the Bell lizardman and my 3rd print has the "impostor" Sutherland logo. That's fascinating. (Meanwhile my older Monster Manual is a 1978 third Alpha print with a wizard even though it doesn't have the yellow band.) Ultimately I think putting the lizardman on an opaque background wouldn't have worked. It's cool because it's printed right there on the art - you can look at a 1st print Holmes booklet for evidence.

Another possibility would be to ensure that all cover art near the bottom had a suitably-colored spot the size of a postage stamp. That way the lizard man could be put right there. After all, cover art regularly includes a much larger spot that is suitable for the book's title.
