I'm looking to put together a table of random sounds that can be heard when a character is listening at a door. Perhaps the room is empty and you want to add some ambiance to an otherwise mundane situation. I did a short search online and came up with little. There's probably a table in the DMG but I was thinking it might be fun if people on the boards come up with some brief descriptors. Ideally, I would make a double column table with the second column containing smells. Any takers, list your short descriptions below. Example: (sound) short brisk brush strokes over a rough surface. (sound) irregular ticking of a time piece. (smell) rosewater or freshly washed linen. (smell & sound) the chopping of raw meat on a butcher's block. Oh, I should mention that I'll make the final table freely available to all once compiled

Footsteps. Either clacking upon the stone or shuffling through the dirt
Water. Babbling into a pool or gushing in a torrent. Or just a regular drip down to the floor
the wind. A low moan echoing to a gust that rattles the door violently
Voices. A conversation between conspirators or the repeated muttering of a single person; and never quite discernable as words
The smell of Smoke. First sign of fire
Cooking. Sometimes enticing and sometimes repulsive. Always strong
Musk. Like an animal

Metal on metal. The clang of armor. Clashing swords.
Creepy crawlies en masse. Hundreds of squealing rodents quickly approaching. Skittering hordes of insects.
The sickening sweet smell of death and decay.

Perfumes/Pleasant aromas Herbs and Spices - who's to say dungeon denizens don't like their fresh roasted adventurer properly seasoned? Distant sounds of a rock fall Clicking of a chitinous many legged something-or-other A sudden change in air temperature or a differing of air current temps in the corridor or room

The ticking of a clock. The grinding of gear wheels.
A beating heart.
Music. Either a lone voice or a caucophony of organ pipes
The smell of salt air

Chanting, in unison.
Claws raking the other side of the door
Cries of agony
The smell of sulfur

A giant cutting of the cheese! 50% chance it’s the dwarf in the party.

Cutting the cheese? As in, letting one rip? What kind of cheese? Limburger. That could definitely fall under both categories- sound and smell. Ha-ha! I was thinking about captainjapan 's sound of "footsteps". That's a category that could be expanded upon quite a bit. Slushing through mud, sliding as if on ice, skipping sound of hopscotch, clippety-clop of dancing clogs, swirling woosh of a dervish, stomping out of a fire or bug, dragging of a body. "Whistle while you work...phooweet, wee, wee, phwee."

Here it is in its infancy, a quick d20 table of sounds and smells I named Paradiddle. Nothing stopping it from being a d30 or even a d100 table. All it takes is a few more contributors from the forum Paradiddle

Tobacco smoke is a good one. Thanks, derv. I hadn't thought of that
