Zenopus do you mind if I ask why? Do you think you'll attract different/more players? I can't 100% speak for Zenopus on this, but I assume it comes down to the history of the development of Holmes Basic. AD&D wasn't "a thing" when Holmes created his rules, so he created rules as a cleanup of OD&D with a few new ideas and details dropped in to fill in some perceived gaps. The tie-in to AD&D was done after the fact and was somewhat artificial. Holmes Basic was never intended to be an introduction to AD&D, but was supposed to be an introduction to OD&D for players without the wargame background. Zenopus is the resident expert on Holmes, so he can probably provide more details. It's not a huge issue for me, but the idea was that for con games, I want players to know what they are getting. The term "D&D Basic" is now so strongly associated with B/X and BECMI D&D, that I'd rather not get players who are expecting a game run according to one those systems. Just to avoid any differences between expectations and actualities. "OD&D" implies a lot of flexibility in how the game will be conducted. However, since I wrote the above, my games have been listed as "D&D Basic" by whoever entered them in the system. I guess I will see whether it makes any difference in who registers.

Fin - thanks. I was asking more about the convention related reasons, as I run Blueholme.
Zenopus - thanks, I thought it might be something like that, and I've had similar thoughts/concerns.

Looking forward to my two events! "The Black Eagle Banner" is on Thursday evening from 6-11pm. I listed 6 seats, but more are welcome. Paul hooked me up with Douglas Behringer, both of whom will be supplying the minis. Many thanks to Zach for helping to run this! It's an epic showdown between the forces of Duke Stefan and his Elvenguard, against Baron Ludwig and a Desert Nomad division. There will be multiple individual heroes (the Duke, the Captain of the Elvenguard, the Baron, even Bargle the Infamous). I'm likely going to run a practice battle at home with Battlesystem Tiles. tabletop.events/conventions/gary-con-xv/schedule/1586"Quest for the Heartstone" starting time is (fittingly) on Saturday morning from 8am-3pm. It's an Expert level scenario, for character levels 5-10. Will be using LJN toy pregens. Also 6 seats, but more are welcome. Will very likely break for lunch. I posted a "trailer" in the Garycon Facebook group, earlier this evening. tabletop.events/conventions/gary-con-xv/schedule/827Very much looking forward to Zach's "Forgotten Smugglers' Cave" for my Holmes fix. Also hoping to revisit Portown with Andy, if he's up for DMing a game. The tournament also sounds like great fun.

Has Luke Gygax made any statements about the WOTC situation? Not that I've seen or heard about. I follow him on FB and he's been doing a lot of photo posts.

Has Luke Gygax made any statements about the WOTC situation? Not that I've seen or heard about. I follow him on FB and he's been doing a lot of photo posts. That’s too bad. WOTC’s latest “OGL” draft is an insult. Sure, everyone is talking about deauthorization and hateful content. But check this out. Read section 3 (a) and (b): “3. WHAT YOU OWN. Your Licensed Works are yours. They may not be copied or used without your permission. You acknowledge that we and our licensees, as content creators ourselves, might independently come up with content similar to something you create. If you have a claim that we breached this provision, or that one of our licensees did in connection with content they licensed from us: (a) Any such claim will be brought only as a lawsuit for breach of contract, and only for money damages. You expressly agree that money damages are an adequate remedy for such a breach, and that you will not seek or be entitled to injunctive relief. (b) In any such lawsuit, you must show that we knowingly and intentionally copied your Licensed Work. Access and substantial similarity will not be enough to prove a breach of this Section 3.” Section 3 is not ordinary boiler plate. It’s a shake down. Hypothetical facts: if WOTC takes your work and creates a derivative work, then You can’t sue for copyright infringement. You also can’t sue for a restraining order. You may only try to sue for “breach of contract”, a contract that does not exist. And the only relief you can ask for are “money damages” that you won’t be able to prove. Note that you are waiving all other forms of relief, like attorney fees. Incredible! This is a JOKE!

Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend Gary Con this year. Hopefully next year.

dicebro: I'm sorry to hear that! * * * * * If things look different above, It's because I merged together two separate Gary Con 2023 threads so all the info would be in one place. * * * * * This year there are at least 32 games listed that are described as Original D&D, which doesn't even include my two (which are under "D&D (Basic)" this year) * * * * * So who all do we have here that is attending this year? From above it looks like at least Finarvyn, grodog, stormberg, paleologos, fatdragontom, muddy, skars, chicagowiz and myself. I also know @francisca, tetramorph and welleran who post more often at K&KA will be there. Anybody else?

Definitely going to GaryCon. Sadly, with the badge we purchased we couldn't sign up for games until a few days ago and most of the non-5E stuff was gone already. I'll finally be able to game with my sons (usually one of us is GM, but now all 3 get to play!) so I'm pumped even through it's 5E.

Two spots remain available in my Skate Wizards RPG game, but everything else has filled up at this point. I'm very excited for the convention and spending time preparing for my sessions.

Pretty stunned myself with the luck I had in registering. The best year for me by far. But I've certainly had those years where I could only attend for one Saturday or the weekend. Trying to get in pickup games.
I am running two slots of Diplomacy, Thursday and Sunday. Both are available for sign up.

I still have several spots in both of my sessions - Thursday and Friday afternoon. The bummer for me is that as a teacher I'm not allowed to take personal days up against holidays and/or vacations, and the week after GaryCon is our Spring Break, so we won't arrive until late Friday. We are playing games Saturday and Sunday.

Is there an OD&D Proboards kind of meet up, or do y'all know each other so well that any meet the bar works? I ask only because I can't stay overnight. Angie's having some surgery, so I'm driving to LG for my Friday and Sunday sessions, staying a bit for the dealer hall, and that's my GC this year I wanted to see if a get-together coincided with when I'll be there.

I'll miss seeing everyone. Really bummed about not being able to make it this year. Looking forward to next year. If anyone is coming to Origins, I will be there Friday and Saturday, just walking around as a tourist! Beer will be drunk at the Big Bar on 2.

My sons and I got back from GaryCon yesterday. A great weekend. Brought home a trunk full of loot from Goodman, Black Blade, and Troll Lord booths. Got to play in a couple of D&D sessions. Got to have some friendly conversations with a few friends I only encounter at conventions. Exhausted, as I should be, and finally recovering today. Somewhat.
Anyway, another great convention!

Congrats! I had one of my best conventions ever. I do want to thank everyone I got to play with around Steven Winter's game table. He was exceptional with his creative design, impressive tabletop display, and smooth game procedures. If anyone gets a chance I highly recommend playing in one of his games.
We, of course, lost in the end in spectacular fashion! But I feel the best of us has somehow brought us back from the dead and we are following him in devoted fashion.

I had a blast running and playing games at GaryCon XV. Thanks to all the game masters and players from the forums here that helped make it an excellent adventure

My two sessions filled and went well, everyone had a good time. Watched the charity auction for the first time, which was far more fun than I ever could have guessed. Came home with Covid though and have been feeling crappy all week.
