Magic Missile Auto-hit Predicated on Chainmail?

Perhaps this was mentioned before somewhere else ...
Maybe the auto-hit feature of the magic missile spell relies on the understanding of magic/enchanted arrows from Chainmail?
"Enchanted Arrows: These missiles will always hit a normal target, but against fantastic opponents ..."
Perhaps in the back and forth about whether to allow it to auto-hit or roll in D&D, it would come down to whether the target was normal or fantastic?
Another good reason to get that fighting man to 3rd level!
