Any thoughts/experiences re: allowing players to choose a Human type category from Monsters & Treasures as a "background" kit/option?
Maybe allowing a player to choose to be a Bandit, Berserker, Pirate, Nomad, Cave Person, etc.?
Most of these don't come with any game mechanic impact, but some do: Berserkers, Cave People, etc.
Curious also as to whether anyone created any new categories, whether for this purpose or not?

This is the first place my mind goes. Not exactly what you meant but adjacent. I did use some of these in my hometown Whitebox games from around half a decade ago. There was a memorable Caveman PC who ended up helping save Camelot from the wiles of Morgan LaFey.

Great idea! Several of the specialists (sailor, smith, etc.) might also make appropriate backgrounds.

My friend who took over DMing for me when my work schedule changed played him. Inspired by Encino Man. He somehow outlived about a dozen other characters despite his AC and stalled a cybernetically enhanced Balrog for a few rounds until the Knights of the Round Table showed up. Good times. |

That is some NetHack levels of nonsense going on there! Sounds like a good reason to have more cavemen in otherwise faux-medieval games if I've ever heard one. |

Cool idea. If you will look to This Thread you will find that some of those types have been used as backgrounds. It works fine in my experience. |
