Sutherland's work is iconic. I have a copy of Metamorphosis Alpha that is signed by him.

Honestly, Sutherland's work is definitive D&D form me. Realistic armor and weapons; dirty underdog adventures facing dangers.

As much as Trampier is my favorite from that era, when I think of the gritty realism of D&D David Sutherland and Roger Raupp are what I picture. No oversized swords. Armor that makes sense. Realistic proportions. The heroes feel like they are really in danger. Over time the D&D art, and fantasy art in general, trended towards making the heroes into super-heroes, I don't believe the monsters are a threat to them.

He was a great guy. We had some really positive interactions on the old Tekumel yahoo group.

As far as I'm concerned, Sutherland and Trampier are the two Official Artists of AD&D. And Sutherland's art in Legions of the Petal Throne is wonderful.
