I put out a feeler for a Diplomacy game on our Discord server, and would like to repeat it here.
I would be happy to run it, but if so we wouldn't start until Summer. If someone else referees then we could start earlier.
The game would be held on Discord. The referee would be responsible for processing and reporting turns, handling disputes and events, and managing the official player allegiances from turn to turn (Discord allows you to make chats invisible to individual players).
It seems most likely we'd be doing weekly turns. Something along the lines of: freely message other players throughout the week, make sure you get your orders in by Friday, turns processed Saturday. So, expect the game to last at least 5-6 months going by the 20- to 24-turn observed average of Dip games.
The first question is: what would we play? I'm happy to play anything, but Bog Standard, an established Middle-earth variant, or coming up with a quick & dirty D&D variant might prove most popular (Greyhawk, Blackmoor, Wilderlands are all good options, but personally I'm open to any fantasy/sci-fi world or making up our own).
If we go the route of making a new variant, I would suggest we keep house rules at the bare minimum. The referee can always sprinkle in events and other spices midgame if all are amenable.

I'm up for it.
But we've got to remember one thing: don't take things personally. It's just "business," as they say.
Fight on!

I think anywhere from 4-7 should make for a reasonable game.

Makes me wonder if anybody has ever done a mobster variant.

Diplomacy is a fun game, but it has ruined some friendships over the decades. I'm not sure I'm up for the stress, but have a great time with it!

Update: if this gets off the ground, we will start a game sometime in June. I'm volunteering myself to sit this one out as a player and instead act as umpire/MC, but if someone else feels gung ho about the role I can hand it over. We'll be playing the 1973 Hyborian Age II variant, probably with the 1971 Diplomacy rules. The game is for 5 players, and follows all the standard rules except for one simple addition about how supply centers work. If we end up with too many or too few players, we can vote on a different variant to play. Let me know if you're interested!
