Hi everyone –
I am interested in running a 3LBB open table. We’ll be playing rules as written, using the Alternate Combat system. We can add house rules as we go, but it’s 1974 unless we run into a real obstacle.
CAMPAIGN
SETTING
I’m using the Gygax 75 Challenge as my starting point, so at the very least you can expect a 3-level dungeon and a fortified town to resupply and take shelter. The surrounding area will be based on “the implied setting” – dangerous, wild, and vaguely post-apocalyptic.
ABOUT ME
Cut my teeth on Moldvay in 1983. Stepped away from RPGs in 1990, came back in 2018. Have run a fair number of contemporary systems but bounced right off 5e. You can check my post history to see how I’ve interacted with this community. I’m a dad with a demanding full-time job – Saturday mornings are my sweet spot.
REFEREE STYLE
I prefer to narrate in 3rd person, and I don’t expect you to be an actor, just engaged. I telegraph danger and let you tackle it in whatever way you choose. I reward creative thinking and teamplay. I’ve played a fair number of contemporary systems, including so-called “story” games so I value player input and co-creation, but at heart, I’m old school. I don’t mind debate, but my word is final. I have some red lines: no sex, no sexual assault, no graphic torture, no racism, homophobia, or transphobia. But my orcs are evil, evil, evil.
I’m looking for team players with an old school mindset. If after a session or two you decide this campaign is not for you, let me know – I appreciate any feedback, it’ll help with future recruitment and help me grow as a referee.
INTERFACE
Discord for voice and between game chat. No video. No streaming. Owlbear Rodeo for dice and simple maps during combat or when something is not clear. Both systems can be run from your browser with minimal effort.
GAME STYLE
Classic exploration and dungeon crawl. Over time we can introduce hex crawling. Assumption is that you return to town between sessions. I’ll post equipment availability and prices on the Discord chat – roleplaying a shopping trip that isn’t narratively interesting is a waste of precious time.
We’ll use both the caller (for bigger groups) and a mapper during sessions. The community map can be uploaded to discord between sessions.
WHEN
Saturday mornings at 10am EST. Sessions will last 2-3 hours with a 10-minute break every hour.
If at least two players show up, game on.
RECRUITMENT
If I get three reliable players on the bench, the campaign is a go.
Like I said, I’ll run sessions for at least two players, but I top out at six. I’ll post a message on Discord every Thursday to gauge attendance.
I’ll keep this thread open for new players.
INTERESTED?
Post in this thread or send me a message. Tell me why you’re interested and if you’re cool with my red lines. Once we’ve got a few players, I’ll share a discord invite.
FIRST SESSION
If I get players, kick off is April 23, 2022
