Can anyone draw a picture of these two? An action scene would be fun, but we'd settle for portraits.

Would you like for me to contact Chris Holmes? He is an artist, and drew new pictures of B&Z for Tales of Peril. If so, what is the time frame for completion?

Yes please! We sent him an email a while back but didn't ask specifically for art. If he has good images that aren't widely known already drawn that would be OK too.
I'm encouraging people to get everything in by the end of April if possible. Thanks so much! Your article laid out well BTW.

Hey, I'd love to jump on this one if Chris Holmes is busy. I've been gathering reference materials for accuracy, so if Chris wants to pass anything on I'd be happy to take it. What images were posted online have since had their hyperlinks broken.
I imagine Boinger and Zereth at a table in the Green Dragon Tavern, drinking sour ale and on their last coin.
Green Dragon Tavern: The tavern is lit by a big central fire and a few tapers. A serving table near the entry way. The table they share in the back corner has wooden benches. Stout beer is served in wooden mugs, wine is served in "a horn cup with a metal base to hold it upright".
Boinger: Halfling Thief. Wears a grey hooded cloak, jacket of chainmail and sandals on his furry feet. From the "Meadow Country to the South". Also possibly has shield in possession.
Zereth: Fighter/M-U. Black hair, brown eyes, swarthy, high cheekbones, narrow chin, even white teeth. Jagged scar across left cheek. From "Labolinn" (more recently), but originally "of the Old People, the Elidel". This term, Elidel, is perhaps Holmes' version of Tolkien's term for the elves, Eldar. The name is also similar to Eldil, a race of angelic creatures in Lewis' Space Trilogy. Zereth's home is also referred to as "the Elfland". (This phrasing is perhaps a reference to Dunsany's the King of Elfland's Daughter.) Possibly has scrolls or black-feathered arrows in possession.

Bromeliad, if you want to take this up, that would be awesome. Worst case scenario we get two images! Or if you want to wait that's OK too.

Update - Bromeliad - Chris Holmes can't do the art right now and has given his blessing to others to take it up. So, Boinger and Zereth away! Your composition sounds great, have at!

Alright, sounds good. I'm still tempted to draw an action scene but either way I should have a picture over the next week or so. If anyone has pics of the duo that show their faces, post them here! I don't want to miss out on a detail like an eye patch

cool! I'm sure interpretations have varied over time. There's a couple examples in Dragon magazine...sounds like I should order a copy of Tales of Peril :-)

Tales of Peril is not very easy to find. I'm stoked to see what you come up with, bromeliad!

I have returned from my sojourns! While I was not able to track down the duo and personally lay eyes on their faces (the villagers at the Green Dragon said I had just missed them), I produced this drawing based on descriptions supplied by the tavern-folk. For I, the sweet and gentle artist, did not want to follow them into whatever dreary tomb or crypt into which they were headed...perhaps if they return, I shall draw up a picture of their travails... Without inset text: And ye olde classical black-and-white version, for color fades, but line remains:

Oh, wow. That's an outstanding picture. Really love the depth of it, with layers of light dividing it into closer and more distant pools of illumination.

Nice work!
FWIW, I don't think Chris ever envisioned Boinger with a beard; he actually once indicated to me that he was surprised when Roslof drew Boinger with a mustache in Dragon. Chris' vintage (1970s) and modern (Tales of Peril) images of Boinger are all clean-shaven. Likely from that Tolkien conception that Hobbits are largely facial-hair free.

Roslof, that's the one who told me that Boinger had a mustache! But when I heard "whiskers", I saw "beard", and now look where we are. Sadly, the illustrations from In The Bag were the only ones I found for visual reference. A much-improved beard-free Boinger?

Art is like magic. I'm amazed that you can change something like that.

The blurb from that issue re: the cover reads, "Jim Holloway had a lot of fun with this months cover, which he has named Butch and Sundance: The Early, Early, Early, Early, Early, Early Years. The elf and halfling have discovered that their DM decided the campaign should be more exciting — from the DM’s point of view, of course."

The first issue of Dragon magazine I owned was #46, which included The Sorcerer’s Jewel with what I've always considered the canonical illustrations of Boinger, Zereth and Co. Boinger sports what I consider a Tom Selleck-worthy 'stache.
