I liked it. A lot.
Being a kid in the 80's there were a few seminal films that defined an era, the impact of Ghostbusters cannot be overstated. We all wanted to strap on proton packs and bust some ghosts! So obviously there is a ton of nostalgia here. That said, while of course they used nostalgia it was done with a great deal of respect and the story does not overly rely on those warm fuzzies, while it does use them effectively. The characters stand on their own, and the kids really carried the movie which you know is a huge risk. This movie is for Ghostbusters fans young and old. I just loved the ending.

Aww, you beat me to it.
I never thought I would cry at a Ghostbusters movie, but, well, there you have it.
If I had to characterize it against the original, I would say that Afterlife is the feel-good family film to the original's adult comedy.
My daughter liked the little girl as "scientist" angle very much.

My daughter liked the little girl as "scientist" angle very much. We went for my daughter's b'day party, she wanted to go see it. Both my kids loved it. McKenna Grace who played Phoebe the scientist girl really carried the movie.

I loved her hairstyle. It was a little nod to Egon from the Real Ghostbusters cartoon. Subtle, but it's there.

I haven't gone to the theater to see a movie twice in decades. Then Dune came out and I saw it twice. Now I'm tempted to go see Afterlife again.

Just saw it tonight. A nice slow burn movie, which is rare nowadays. It had a lot of organic fan-service throwbacks as well. Some good jump scares, good acting (always hit-or-miss with kid leads), and a very emotionally satisfying ending.

I'm going to chime in because I just saw it last night and posted to Facebook about it this morning. Here's what I wrote:
I, impulsively, went to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife after work last night - and was SO glad I did. I'd been eager to see it ever since the first trailer landed online, and it was worth the wait. In some ways, it's like I was waiting for this movie for 37 years. As soon as Janine Melnitz introduces herself, it felt like I was home after a long time away.
It's in many ways a perfect sequel, more than the first sequel was. It's the kind of sequel where you go "Oh, of course! The original story wasn't done without this part. We needed this second movie!"
Moving into SPOILER territory...
There *is* a long, slow burn to this film, as it attempts to firmly ground you in reality before the supernatural and super-science starts showing up. It's necessary, of course, so that by the time Phoebe stands up to Gozer, you really care about her and hope she'll be okay. It didn't need *quite* so long a slow burn and I could have used about 15 minutes less of Summerville, particularly of Podcast, the Asian Dan Aykroyd counterpart, and the forced relationship between Trevor and Lucky.
Paul Rudd is great and seems to be having a ball making the Rick Moranis role his own, but it's Paul Rudd -- we knew going in he was going to be great. The pleasant surprise was McKenna Grace, who is brilliant as Phoebe - though if I'd recognized her from Gifted I wouldn't have been surprised; she was amazing in that too. And when Harold Ramis joins them, through movie magic, it's a deeply moving pay-off.
The saddest thing is that we had to wait so long for this. When the Old Guard shows up at the end, Peter and Ray look so old it's like they have one foot in the grave already. When Gozer hurls them back, I can't imagine they would have landed safely without shattering their hips or something. I feel like we should have got this movie 15 years ago. Then it would have been AnnaSophia Robb playing Phoebe, since AnnaSophia was the McKenna Grace of 15 years ago.
There were times when I almost gave this movie as low as a B+, but it rallies so strongly by the climax that I unequivocally give it an A. And make sure to stay for those now-required teasers during the end credits!

And make sure to stay for those now-required teasers during the end credits! A fair assessment. Pretty much what I got out of it too. There were a few slow bits in the mushy middle, but I was never bored. You're right, you could really feel the age of Ackroyd, Murray, Hudson, and Weaver. It made me feel old.
