So I am currently re-reading Darkness Beneath. I have never run this but am thinking about it. In the Upper Caves there is a waterfall that falls upward (area #4). The text says anyone caught in it will be transported elsewhere, and gives a few suggestions. In your campaign, if you have run this, where does it go? Otherwise, any suggestions?
Cheers!

Realistic interpretation leaves few opportunities, but it is an intriguing question.
An easy answer is to make this from an alternate realm and use portals. Floating water from another dimension which has alternate physics where liquids float on air and flow to alternate ends, not contours of solids. Sort of like magnets filings in water?
Or make it a creature. Not just a Water Weird, but a controller of water which can manipulate a connected amount from distance and without sight. For added strangeness, make it mindless. Like Planar Fish (Giant Tuna?) in the space above. Cutting the river than can damage(Splash!) a part of the effect. Or the steam begins to flow backwards collecting itself.
The obvious answer to fit normal D&D physics (for me) is to make this part of an Anti-Gravity level above Level 1. The effect of which is embedded in the water and reverses somewhere in the maze level above to fall back to deep below. Another secret shortcut, both to the end and a quick escape back out.

I like to use wacky stuff like this to transport my characters to Barsoom.

Let's not forget the giant frog, lairing in the pool below (er, above) the falls... It's always possible that adventurers will be eaten before traversing the falls.

In that case I'd send them to Blackmoor, maybe to explore the Temple of the Frog. More fitting to the situation than Barsoom.

In flipping thru the issues of Fight On! I came across the Spring Temple of Ai by Gabor Lux. Being that it is an isolated island temple in a marsh this seems ideal. Depending on the level of the party I would change the guardian to fit. Other than that, I like to idea of the Water Naga answering a question or granting a wish.
Cheers!
