This was post was in this thread, but I decided to move it to its own thread on the General Board, as the goal is to make people aware of the show in case they would like to visit while it is running. * * * * * David Sutherland's iconic painting for Holmes Basic is on exhibit for the first time at the Norman Rockwell Museum in MA! I visited two weeks ago, below is my best photo of it. I've also written a blog post for the Zenopus Archives about my visit: zenopusarchives.blogspot.com/2021/08/the-holmes-basic-set-cover-art-exhibited.html

I will say one thing about the current D&D renaissance and the 5e popularity thing. I believe it's elevated D&D's profile and engendered people taking a closer look at it as a legitimate hobby and the art associated with it as legitimate art. The book "Art & Arcana" and now pieces like this being displayed in museums. That aspect is very much needed, even if it comes too late for Dave and others to realize the extent of their legacies.

I've been to the museum, we travel up to Stockbridge a few times a year (it's only about 1.5 hours away- a bit longer since we move recently). I personally am a big fan of Rockwell's works, if not an art fan per-se.
I'll have to see if the Mrs. wants to head up there in the coming weeks. We went last Fall, but the pandemic had sucked all the fun out of everything up there and we left early. Should be a better time this year!

Iconic image that I sadly came to late being a Moldvay convert. No less appreciated!

Yeah, that's too bad about the frame covering so much of the painting, but that's still cool to see it up so close.

Is it just me or were the wings painted higher up, and then the artist decided to repaint them lower down? There are some suspicious brushstrokes just above the dragon's wings...

I noticed that too, but didn't think much of it. Hard to tell what's going on there...some of the strokes go through the left wing and underneath. I don't know what he painted it on or what methods he used, but it kind of looks like paper, where the paint was a little too wet and the paper got crinkled.

Wife and I made it up here today.
I'll have a few pics in the next day or so of some of the big sculptures outside that were cool. I didn't take any pics of the art, but my wife may have.
Thing that blew me away with Sutherlands piece were the vibrant colors and the detail you do not see on the box cover or even in Zenopus' pics. It is 1000x better in person. It's like seeing it for the first time. Anyone on the fence about Sutherland's work I think would be swayed by seeing it in the flesh.
I wasn't too impressed with the exhibit overall.. Valejo and Frazetta and a few other old (some VERY old) were great, but I was disappointed that there was a large focus on more modern fantasy art. Most of it was very well done but in a generic fantasy paperback kind of way.
Still, glad I went.

Glad to hear you made it! Your post reminds me that I have another post to make with some close-ups of parts of the painting. Edit: I had almost finished this before, so I was able to get it posted quickly. Sutherland Dragon Details

And forgot to mention- In the museum gift shop prominently displayed with the coffee table fantasy art books for sale were 5E Player Handbooks, and DCC RPG core books (with cover art I'm not familiar with).
So yep, I'm guessing D&D is more popular than it has ever been.
