Why did he seem to disappear from the scene? I don't know for certain, but I suspect that the failure of the Dwimmermount KS (the first big OSR KS failure) may have had something to do with it. I also suspect that Alex Macris's involvement with the political affairs of Milo Yiannopolos may have been a distraction, at the very least. But both of those things are several years ago - don't really know now!

Thanks to this thread, I've just started reading some of his old blog, the mule abides. He stopped updating in at the start of 2015, but there's some amazing stuff in there! I'll say that, sometimes, it's nice to be new to the scene. An embarrassment of riches, so to speak.

Michael (Gronan) Mornard December 31, 2012 at 5:11 pm I killed hipsterism and took its stuff. Sadly, it had crap stuff…. junk I threw away twenty years ago.

In NYC, still, I believe and still hobby-working at Autarch. Though I admit I haven't checked in with him since before Covid and his "real" job is in the NYC health system. He stopped posting stuff around the net really after jumping on board the ACKS train around 2012. Badger is right that the drama-drama over the year or two delay of Dwimmermount's release might have taken some wind out of his broader posting sails, but I think being dedicated to ACKS and perhaps some personal matters may have been more of a factor.

I enjoy his blog and found his interview, now on YouTube, to be very informative.

Why did he seem to disappear from the scene? Tavis was a popular regular and a great contributor at GaryCon every year and then we learned about 7-8 years ago he and his wife had triplets. I know there are still guys at the Con who remember him and wish him well, but we all knew it was the end. If you see him, tell him thanks. He added a lot to the scene.

The people that believe, "Nothing will change when I have kids!" have never had kids.

What a pleasant surprise to have one's partner accidentally Google one's name and find this thread! Kind of like those fantasies about attending one's own funeral and hearing the eulogies, now with 100% less dying.
It's a wondrous pleasure too to see comments from folks I know in person, and more unexpectedly from new readers of the Mule - glad you're enjoying it, captainjapan! I just left a Discord session running Griffin Mountain for the blog's founder james_nostack and occasional contributor Thaddeus, along with the player of Lydio the Spider Dwarf from our Thracia campaign who re-united some of the old New York Red Box crew online. After years not roleplaying at all, it's satisfying to have that (and the associated old friends) in my life again.
Thankfully I only had twins in 2013, not triplets, but yes that's been much more responsible for my radio silence than Dwimmermount or anything else. It's great to see Grognardia active again; we wanted to publish James' work because we were fans of his blog, and I wouldn't have been happy with any outcome in which it stayed shut. I'm not currently part of Autarch but my departure was entirely amiable. A silver lining of the pandemic was that Alex and I re-connected during that phase where we were all reaching out to see if people were OK. He and I have different ideologies, but we've each had terrible experiences interacting with people selected on that basis alone. Gamers are a much better hang. In part that's because when there's no end beyond having a good time, it's harder to use that to justify crummy means. And because collectively having a good time is a more practical goal than politics tends to pursue, it's easy to see who is actually contributing to making it happen and figure out how to join that team. So glad to see y'all continuing the good work!
The twins are now around the age their older sibling was when we first went to GaryCon together, so maybe that's in the cards for us soon. If so, I'll hope to see some of y'all there, and to do some more of my own share of thanking everyone whose contributions to the scene made life more vivid, imaginative, and fulfilling.

I am indeed taking the family to GaryCon this year! I'll be glad to see some of y'all again and meet some OD&D fans I haven't yet. I'm running kids' events on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, in which players are mice too cute to die riding atop aquazombies from Jennelle Jaquays' classic Night of the Walking Wet. On Friday night I'll resume the tradition of running a party of 13 adventurers through the adventure into the wee hours; this one is off the schedule but if you're reading this there is probably a place among the 13 for you. I'm heartbroken by Jennelle's passing, it's really been fun re-envisioning her work through a Redwall/Mouse Guard lens and I'd been looking to sharing the results with her. Here's the schedule link for the Saturday kids' event.

Tavis that's awesome! Great to see you posting again too. Sadly Garycon is not in the cards for me this year as it coincides with my oldest daughter's senior play.

Or a sleep-drunk midnight game where we move the tables together at the Lodge? or something else? - This a great year for games. A lot of fruit on the tree. I just don't want miss yours. - David B.
