Today - May the Sixth, 2021 - marks the day that Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace becomes as old as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was when Episode I came out.
So, in the spirit of what is now officially old school fun, if you had your own podracer, what color would it be and what random Star Wars vehicle pieces would it be jury-rigged from? Also, do you think Tosche Station carries power converters that are Boonta-Eve legal? (In all honesty, I really do love the race scene and think that kind of fun fits in with the original spirit of Star Wars, regardless of the rest of the movie. Did you know the majority of the effects used for the pod race were practical, as well?)

Just watched Ep I on the 4th, as a 2K resolution theatrical preservation. Today we watched Ep II on DVD. I don't know if it's the film grain, or the lack of DVNR, or just "quality over quantity", but man does Phantom Menace's CGI look a whole lot better than the other two prequels >_<

Just watched Ep I on the 4th, as a 2K resolution theatrical preservation. Oh cool, I was hoping this would eventually happen. I’m convinced Phantom Menace in theaters on 35mm film prints was so much better than the later plasticky digital releases. The trailer on film: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnhqwRQf04AI don’t think I could stomach watching it again under any circumstances, though, even if I have a slight bit of nostalgia for it.

I mean, Revenge of the Sith is probably a better movie overall*, but it doesn't look as good. *I mean it's the movie with the opera scene and the one where Ian McDiarmid gets to gleefully ham it up as the evil Darth Sidious in all his glory. As absolutely cheesy and campy of a B movie it is, that was worth the price of admission for me. Saw it in the theater and loved how evil that bastard was.

If I had a pod racer, it would be black and chrome with a couple of bantha skeletons over the engines...

I can't watch episode 2 or 3 at all, but I can still watch 1. It was a mixed bag and actually showed what was going wrong with the writer-director and the problems with billions of dollars in one person's hands.
He should never ever have gone back and tried to recapture what happened originally. The world had moved on and he was no longer the same person either. You know they are making a Godfather TV series too. After Godfather 3.

Phantom Menace is my least favorite movie among the prequels. It had me checking my watch (when Qui Gon Jinn was explaining Midichlorians) wondering how much longer it would go on. Episodes 2 and 3 at least kept my attention, although the acting wasn't great. The only part I really like about episode 1 is the fight with Darth Maul. Still, I'd rather watch Phantom Menace than any of the sequels.

Now goooooo *jowel warbling noises* So yeah it's definitely a whole 'nother feeling from the OT, that's for sure. I guess I was young enough when I came out I could fully appreciate it, and stuff like the Clone Wars series and the EU books that cover that time period didn't hurt. Doesn't necessarily perfectly fit the scope of this subforum by any stretch, but it's interesting how much time has passed now and how there's been two or three generations to analyze and deconstruct the prequels at this point.

Weird, I could've sworn I wrote another reply in here, but it's gone... ...oh well...

This video actually has some pretty interesting and impressive insights into the pod race CGI: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbAV4dO8gvMNot sure what my pod racer's carriage would be, but the engines would be Y-Wing nacelles each with half a TIE Fighter panel fixed to the outsides, pointing up.

Did you happen to notice the little cameo by one of Anakin's podracer engines in Mandalorian, by the way?

I did! That was pretty neat, and a clever way to recycle the design.
