Interesting. I wonder if there will be "call backs" to the original King Kong vs Godzilla?
(I have to vote for Godzilla, because even the giant Kong from Kong:Skull Island doesn't have any "energy attacks" comparable to the Big G's breath.)

Well, in the trailer, Kong appears to shove a large tree or similar object down Godzilla's throat at a certain point. That's definitely a callback.

I think it looks pretty good! I like seeing these classic giant monster movies being revisited with modern special FX.
I have to give my vote to Kong though. After seeing Peter Jackson's King Kong kick butt on 2 T-Rex's, I realize that intelligence and opposable thumbs outmatch any fang and claw. Primates are the ultimate monster.
Though, gotta give points to Godzilla for his nuclear radiation breath!

As far as their relative intelligence goes, I've heard Godzilla compared to a very smart and well-trained dog with good instincts for self-preservation and the protection of those it deems allies. Kong, however, is very nearly human. He's an intelligent primate who has mastered the use of some tools, as evidenced by his axe weapon here. It remains to be seen if Godzilla's extreme durability and overwhelming offensive attacks can overcome Kong's intelligence and tenacity.

My favorite genre of movies is that of giant monsters. I am REALLY looking forward to this one.

"Godzilla's out there hurting people, and we don't know why."
I don't know how actors utter such a line with a serious face.
This movie is going to be so bad. I'm not saying I won't watch it. But complete sobriety while watching is probably not an option.

I'm guessing Mecha-Godzilla is going to be involved here in some capacity. Traditionally, in the Japanese movies, whenever Godzilla goes berserk and randomly attacks cities and humans without clear provocation, it's usually a Mecha-Godzilla wearing a skin to resemble the original. There's even a diagram in the background of a scene in this trailer showing something like Godzilla's lower torso with text akin to "battery fully charged".

This movie is going to be so bad. I hope! That's what makes these movies so great. (Except that intolerable 1998 Godzilla with Matthew Broderick)

I'm thinking King Ghidorah is also going to be in on the action because of the after-credits scene of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

If I recall correctly, the original had two endings, one for Japan where Godzilla wins, one for the US where Kong wins.
But I'm thinking this one will end in a team-up to fight Mecha-Godzilla or something else.

I'm thinking King Ghidorah is also going to be in on the action because of the after-credits scene of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. King Ghidorah had strong regeneration powers in KOTM. On the level of certain Marvel characters, let's say Deadpool level. I'm guessing Charles Dance's character could splice Ghidorah and Godzilla genes to grow the skin for the Mechagodzilla endoskeleton, kind of like how Skynet grows living skin for the Terminators in that franchise. Since Ghidorah's blood also generates natural lightning like some species of eel and deep sea creatures, it would also make sense to use his genes in Mechagodzilla's power core. edit: Two more small observations about King Ghidorah. The head that was recovered was the silly/curious head that fans nicknamed Kevin. Some speculate that if Ghidorah is allowed to fully regenerate from that head, he'll have a new personality and possibly will be less evil and more helpful, like the earth-guardian Ghidorah from GMK. But I'm guessing Kevin is being held in some sort of stasis field or cold storage to prevent that. They want to use his blood and cells to further their terrorist goals, but he's an Alpha-type Titan so he can't be controlled with the ORCA like the others can.

"Realistic"? That's not the word I would use. Kong is going to open up a can.

"Realistic"? That's not the word I would use. That's actually kind of the point. It's all in good fun. Kong is going to open up a can. Of course he is. My hunch is they are going to fight to a draw, and then team up against another big bad.

This just reminds me how much I want movie theaters to reopen where I live There’s something about a movie theater that allows me to watch absolute crap and enjoy it that I just would turn off in 10 seconds if it was on the TV. Exhibit a is that last wonder woman movie which I turned off despite it being Christmas and despite the fact that I have a 13-year-old daughter who was supposed to be “empowered” by that garbage. I would’ve sat through that movie at a theater. But at home?

Has anyone here used Kaiju or Titans in your D&D games, and if so, in what context?
The Tarrasque or particularly large Purple Worms or Sea Serpents count, as do the Titan monster type.
In the past, as a kid, I must admit I loved some Godzilla, Ultra-Man, Power Rangers and all that type stuff, so I included various elements of it in my games directly. Nowadays those references are tucked away as little Easter eggs.

Yes, I have since childhood included Talos, a triple iron golem (as referenced in the AD&D DMG and, before that, in Supplement I: GREYHAWK). He has never been beaten. The old AD&D Oriental Adventures book includes some stats and descriptions of kaiju, but I've never used them.

I maintain the biggest problem with the first American Godzilla was calling it "Godzilla". Same issue with the mid nineties Mario Bros. film. If they didn't insist on attaching a franchise to these scripts they'd have been better received. They're ok movies but horrible adaptations of the source material.

I've tried dinosaurs before but found them to be incredibly boring in combat. They're basically just giant piles of Hit Points.

Watched it this morning on HBO Max. It was everything I hoped it would be. Godzilla was my childhood and always had a strange connection to everything else I love, from music to gaming, so I'll always be there on day 1 for anything Godzilla or Kaiju related in general.

I watched it yesterday, definitely NOT for the poor acting/writing. Great CGI and awesome destruction. I do kind of miss the actors in rubber suits demolishing a miniature city though...Also I must be getting old, all I could think during the Hong Kong scenes is I hope the majority of the population got out of the city prior to the destruction

I watched it yesterday, definitely NOT for the poor acting/writing. I think that safely applies to over 90% of every giant monster movie ever made, the notable exception perhaps being the original Godzilla from 1954, which was a rather poignant commentary on the nuclear bomb. Still, this was a great popcorn flick and certain plot points felt very D&D, especially The Hollow Earth plot
