I was posting on the OD&D group on Facebook (not ours; another big one: www.facebook.com/groups/originaldnd/) and holy CRAP are those people exhausting. It was a nice reminder why I'm so glad this place exists. Even when things get slightly heated here, they get only slightly heated, people take a breath, back down, and move on. We're all largely very cool with each other. Also, people who talk about OD&D here can speak with SOME level of authority, at least. The crap that gets spewed over there about "what Gygax and Arneson intended," and "what the books say" is laughable at best, infuriating at worst, but largely just, well, like I said, exhausting. And headache inducing. Anyways, just a longwinded way of saying once again, thanks for being here, folks.

yeah, this board is pretty chill. The few rare blow ups are so mild compared to just about anywhere else on the interwebs.

Consider this "exhibit A" to promote my comments about Facebook and social media in general in the thread about ODD74 on Facebook. Been there, done that, got the scars. Social Media is where people go to verbally abuse one another over slightly differing opinions. This place is much nicer. We have standards.

I don't think it's that bad. For one, both Frank Mentzer and Michael Mornard participate there from time to time, so it's not like no one there knows what they are talking about. For another, I've seen several of the same names I see here over there.
I think the real problem is that it's such a huge membership there compared to here, and the most frequent posters kind of swamp the group with repetitive stuff. The end result is that it forces the knowledgeable people to just give up. I hardly ever read through comments over there, or post much. It's probably much the same for many other people with familiar names...

Anyways, just a longwinded way of saying once again, thanks for being here, folks. Amen, brother. This place has always had such an awesome vibe. I’m honored to be a part of it. Thank YOU! One of the great things about OD&D is that you can take it in a million different directions. I’m always interested getting peoples’ take, here, because you get fascinating historical perspectives that people have dug up (I’m always learning!), you get a well of actual “here’s how I do it” experience (no two alike!), and you get the newbie looking at it with fresh eyes and offering thrilling new perspectives. The key is a tone of enthusiasm and collaboration, I think.

I swear, if I have to see someone quote that stupid "RAW" Dragon article about AD&D one more time...or claim that the only real way to play OD&D is with minis "because it started as a miniatures game!"
