It puzzles me that rock bands haven't been licensed for use in games more. The only one I recall is the Journey video game from the 80's that I played the heck out of at my local arcade. There are the Rock Band and Guitar Hero video games that licensed individual songs. However, where is the AC/DC boardgame? Wouldn't a Led Zeppelin card game rock? And my favorite one to ponder, why isn't there a Black Sabbath role playing game? Their songs and lyrics, especially the first 5 classic Ozzy albums and first 2 with Dio, are calling out for epic fantasy adventure! As well as some of the later albums like Tyr. And if there is any game meant to be an OSR game using the OGL it's the Sabbath RPG. If you were to design a Black Sabbath role playing game what character classes would it have? What encounters and adventures would there be? What would the setting be like? Wizards, Witches, and Neon Knights seem obvious. There are encounters like Fairies with boots, dwarves, Seventh Advent unicorns, and the terrifying Iron Man. There are so many other iconic locations like Behind the Wall of Sleep, Hole in the Sky, Gateway to Heaven, the Magic Ocean of tears. I want to play in a campaign in this setting.

I don't recall that many Black Sabbath lyrics off the top of my head, but mostly song titles. So for character classes you'd have to have The Wizard with the option of Voodoo as subclass maybe, and FM might be renamed War Pigs (but those might just be a faction in the setting, like the Children of the Grave). Encounters may also include Iron Man (or Men, maybe there are several?), Sphinx... And major NPC's include Odin and the Scarlet Pimpernel. And probably the Digital pregnant dog for a clear Sci-Fi influence.

"Demons worry when the Wizard is near!"
The Ref would be the MASTER OF REALITY. PCs are given a Megalomania score on their character sheets. The premiere module would be INTO THE VOID. If your PC is a fairy he MUST wear boots -- or else. The Scifi version would be PLANET CARAVAN.
Sorry, I'll stop now. Blame it on the sugar-rush.

Game sessions MUST be 13 hours long. Or else. Neon Knights could be a new PC class, but I'd imagine that such ostentatious panoply would attract a lot of attention -- esp. on night ops. Dio used to be in a band called Elf. That should be factored into this nascent game. New spell name: Sabbra Cadabra. Don't yet know what the effects will be... Killing Yourself to Live: masochism grants extra xp -- even more if death is the result! Dirty Women: I'm pretty sure that's on the Random Harlot Table of the DMG. The evil eye is a prominent mechanic which can kill -- unless successfully blocked with another such gesture. \m/ New PC class: Supernaut!

Agreed, Supernaut is a necessity. But what does it do? I can picture some sort of astral projection. Got no religion, don't need no friends Got all I want and I don't need to pretend Don't try to reach me, 'cause I'd tear up your mind I've seen the future and I've left it behindDefinitely sounds like a Psionicist. An opportunity to fix OD&D psionics?

Millennium-old, lunar-travelling, future-visiting, burned-out, been-there-and-got-the-Tshirt atheist? I don't know what he would be, but he would be SUPER! Based on their recreational substance habit at the time of recording the album, I'm sure a Supernaut is fueled by magic fairy dust!* -------------- * a.k.a plutonian nyborg

I imagine a massive conflict between technological-based war (not necessarily machinery, but raw steel and weaponry) and magic. Anti-magic Warlords vs. Witches, if you will.
Generals gather in their masses; Just like witches at black masses; Evil minds that plot destruction; Sorcerer of death's construction
Both factions--the War Pigs and the Witches--are pure evil, and the PCs are raw swords-and-sorcery anti-heroes caught in the middle.

Don't forget Sweetleaf and Demon Alcohol! What lyrics would you pull from those songs and turn into game mechanics or setting material? Also, in regards to Demon Alcohol, while Ozzy's solo career does have some great concepts that would fit in well, I was trying to stay focused on Black Sabbath.

If you want some real metal mileage for your RPGs, you should check out Bal-Sagoth. (And then grab some monsters from Roky Erickson.)

The Druid carries Sweet Leaf. I mean, yeah, clearly Sweet Leaf would be a smoking herb. I'd veer away from making it akin to Mary jane, if only because that's just too easy. My question is, what would you do with PARANOID?

My question is, what would you do with PARANOID? GM intrusion triggered with horror check. Mean time... a tundra scenario: Snowblind.

Like Sweet Leaf can be used to step into the portal Behind the Wall of Sleep, a sort of parallel plane, not unlike the ethereal plane, where dreams & nightmares come to life and a whole other battle for the realms is going on. OK, that sounds like Stranger Things, but that's not a bad thing. Stephen King and Peter Straub wrote The Talisman which did this concept, and The Darktower series has a bit of that too. Some 80's Stephen King would fit in nicely with this whole idea I think. I might be pushing the boundaries too much now.

Paranoid is a second level magic-user spell:
The target realizes all is not as it seems. One or more of his allies are in cahoots with the party's adversaries. The target is immobilized for one or two rounds (roll a die: odds = 1; even = 2), as he scrutinizes his fellow adventurers to identify the fifth columnist(s). After this period, the target must roll another saving throw. If he succeeds, he shakes the paranoia off; if he fails, roll 1d3 and consult the the following table:
1: The target has identified the traitor, whom he attacks for another one or two rounds while raging about the traitor's betrayal. Determine the traitor's identity by random die roll.
2: The target races over to the member of the party he trusts the most (determine the identity of this person randomly if necessary) and hysterically insists that the others have betrayed them. The target tries to grapple this trusted colleague to get his full attention for one or two rounds. Any grappling check may be opposed.
3: The target is convinced that all of the others have betrayed the target. He flees for his life as fast as possible, discarding anything that encumbers his flight, for another one or two rounds.

I can picture a Sabbath RPG looking and feeling like the Heavy Metal animation (& magazine), also Frazetta's Fire & Ice. I'd be happy with a HEAVY METAL RPG -- tons of various settings, styles, themes each with their own distinct set of rules. Two of my faves would be Neverwhere/Den and the world of Taarna.

Alright, to recap what we've got here.
The world is at war between Technology and Magic. War Pigs, a sort of techno-alliance of corrupt politicians and generals versus powerful magic wielding Witches.
Classes Supernaut (a sort of Psionicist) Wizard Druid Fighting-Man (like on the cover of Paranoid)
There is another dimension Behind the Wall of Sleep that can be entered different ways Magic Psionically Through a magic herb known as Sweet Leaf
Paranoid is either a condition or a spell (maybe both)

How about a witch class, Country Girl? (one of the most underrated Sabbath songs imo) Spells/Abilities: Conjure elemental/demon/stalker (“She was up from a nether world”) Fire resistance or immunity (“Her eyes were an endless flame”) Lightning (“holy lightning”) Charm (“Desire with a special name”, “Her smile was a winter song”) Kill (“made to snatch your soul away”)
Neon Knights are maybe paladins (“Blessed by the night, holy and bright”)
Sabbra Cadabra I think would have to be a love spell.
Rat Salad would definitely be served in any tavern.
Sign of the Southern Cross, possibly indicative of a cleric class, or maybe an anti-cleric order? Or maybe a ritual (“Giving life to those who died”) involving speaking the word from a book, reciting arcane knowledge (“whispers of forgotten pslams”) and breaking a crystal ball.
Hand of Doom, not a literal hand but a flower that yields some ability—physical? magical?—something powerful but with an increasing chance of addiction with each use, once addicted the user must be in constant supply or else suffer severe withdrawal symptoms potentially permanent loss of constitution points.
Think the War Pigs would be aligned with the black magic powers (they're similar to the witches at black masses, not opposed), perhaps lead by the self-styled Lord of This World.

I used to have story ideas for Black Sabbath and to me it was more rooted in the present of the time, like the Vietnam War and stuff. The story goes that the more evil is being commited, the more humanity is being pushed towards war, death and violence, that Satan gains power and every single soul that died on Earth comes to join his massive undead/demonic army. His agents are the one that incite the war and keep fueling the fire. Then The Wizard appeared from another dimension of Good that combats Satan and he picked a couple of conscientious soldiers with pure hearts to become the "chosen ones", the "agents of good", who will dessert the military and go rogue in order to stop this demonic influence before Satan gains an unstoppable force. The Wizard imbued the chosen ones with amazing agility, strength and resilience and they go to fight monsters or the large-scale human war machine. It's a story that later goes crazy and meta and goes throughout time and space. You'll have the time-traveling Iron Man trying to correct this problem himself and going awry, nuclear apocalypses, alternate dimensions and timelines, and the ultimate goal of the campaign is to break this vicious cycle and prevent The Symptom of the Universe.
I used to have the "Evil Woman" from the cover of the first album and the "blackleaf"(modeled after Sweet Leaf) in my campaigns too, lol, although they were clasically medieval

Speaking of Black Sabbath, it's kind of weird - my neighbour's night-time piano practice keeps me awake, but when I then crank Sabbath up to maximum volume I drift right off ...
