So I just found out that by the end of the week I may be out of a job. My boss didn't get our SBA loan because of shady frauds like Ruth's Chris stealing it all. Our clients are all closing up shop and dropping their orders.
They're making us try to generate our own revenue stream through job boards, but the sheer amount of work I'll need to generate to cover my pay is mind-boggling, especially when one considers the time I'll need to put in bidding jobs vs. the time I'll need to DO the jobs.
Nobody in my state has seen a red cent in unemployment because our Governor is a complete incompetent who is more concerned about issuing edicts concerning the wearing of masks and letting criminals loose in the streets than he is about protecting honest citizens trying to keep a roof over our heads.
I have maybe a month or two cushion, thanks to the stimulus check, if I lose my job. Then? I'm out in the streets.

Despite my complete disgust about the political climate of CT (and NY)- Unemployment has been issued, with no requirement for work search at this time. Of course, when this issue rights itself, they will tax us to death even more than they already do. We would have left if not for my Wife's employment. She is a RN, and her current job I spaying to further her education. A few more years and we are gone. HOWEVER Many things can change in a month or two. keep the faith brother!

Keep track of your formal documents when sparring with the bureaucracy: unemployment, employer, healthcare, etc., as part of your attack strategy - It's no fun being out on the street.

Yeah, the problem is, the way it's messed up here? You can't even get in TOUCH with the bureaucracy to spar with them. People are emailing and hearing nothing back. They're calling (I kid you not) 700 TIMES A DAY and not getting through.

Jason,if we wanted to help out by picking up some of your products, where would be the best place/products to grab (so that you get the biggest "cut")?
(Un?)Luckily my wife has plenty of work and job security as a RN here during all this BS, and I need some new reading material, so....

Right now the only places my stuff is available are through Lulu (Chutzpah!) and DTRPG (Everything else). My website (Elf Lair Games) is in my signature below. I get a monthly staff writer check from TLG, but it doesn't even touch my bills. Thank you for the thought. I really need to get a store setup so I can take pre-orders for Night Shift. I'm confused. Don't you work in a Library? Nope, not since about 2015. I got an offer for my current job (Web content writing) which was work from home, didn't illegally classify me as an independent contractor like the library was, and gave me paid time off, plus a significant raise. At the time it was a no-brainer. Now I kind of wish I hadn't taken it.

I have to say, there are many times in my life when I haven't been thrilled to be a teacher. For example, I have friends with similar degrees who make a lot more money than I do, many of them get Christmas bonuses, and often they get stock options that will help their retirement. At the moment, however, I know that my job is secure and a lot of folks clearly aren't in the same boat. At the moment I'm glad to be a teacher. I'm glad for my current job security, but feel really bad for those in uncertain financial circumstances. These are crazy times, indeed.

That's true. Rumor is, more stimulus might happen. I know our state wants to pass for $2000 a month.

I'm not American, while most of you are - so I try to shut up about politics. But can we all, regardless of nationality, just agree to remember how our leaders acted during this situation next time there's an election?
The president of the United States went on air on Thursday saying that he wants experts to look into what happens when people inject themselves with disinfectant. I'm not all too great a detective, but it seems to me he just doesn't give a flying f**k about the people he has sworn to protect. Perhaps consider making him remember this next time you're called to cast a vote.

My apologies for writing the above comment. It's not that I would be all too upset about anything in particular, these days. But it's tough to read how on one side, people are fearing for their livelihood and their homes, and how on another, politicians and, generally, people supposedly in charge are making jokes. Not an American problem - a worldwide problem, it seems. Tough, and profoundly disheartening, if only because the risk we're all facing is real.

Gaah, please don't delete posts, folks. The thread now reads as if I've lost my marbles, instead of us having a friendly (if political) conversation. - But waysoftheearth is right in admonishing us, and in admonishing me in particular: OD&D'74 is not the place for political discussions, and I was out of line in posting this, last night. Rules here apply for everyone equally, or they don't apply for anyone. And "everyone" includes "me", of course. Now, with Corona, we're facing special circumstances, to say the least: Chances are, all of us are now facing some existential fear. For our loved ones, for our jobs, for our mortgage and loan payments, for the fate of our countries and societies. For things as completely mundane as our supply with our favorite food. (Or in my case, with coffee. ) Those are issues that are inherently political, and as this crisis goes on, it's going to be increasingly hard to talk about these things while staying apolitical. Our staff doesn't want to "gag" you over this, or for you to feel that you're unwelcome here for airing your grievances. Because you aren't. What we are going to ask you, though, going forward, are two things that we want you to remember - in general, regardless of who writes what: 1. You never walk alone. 2. We, as human beings, will win or lose this TOGETHER. And now, as difficult and outright disturbing the present situation might be, we're still winning this.

Geez, I'm glad I missed whatever went down last night. I've been going out of my way to avoid getting political here, of all places, and that would've upset me, that my post had led to that. Yes, there is a chance at more stimulus money. We MAY have had good news on that front a couple days ago, but it's a waiting game. thegreyelf - do you have a Patreon or Kofi or tip jar somewhere? I don't. I am not nearly prolific enough on a consistent basis to maintain a patreon, and I've never, from a personal standpoint, liked the idea of asking for donations via a tip jar (and that is NOT an attack on those who do use tip jars. I have donated to tip jars for people I respect in the service industry severla times throughout this mess; please don't think it's an assault on anyone who does have a tip jar up). I do appreciate the implied offer, more than I can say, though. Thank you.

Those had to be some of the most stressful 10 days ever. Stressful. Depressing. A wake-up call. I'm still looking for other work; my job treated me very badly during this whole thing. They claimed we just didn't have enough work to keep everyone working, so I was going to have to start bidding jobs on a freelance job board (Upwork). Meanwhile, they assumed I was too stupid to see with my own eyes that they'd diverted ALL the work to the other writer we have, including a number of clients that I've worked with for years, who are only with the company due to my work. So they took all my work and diverted it to another, less experienced copywriter, and insulted my intelligence on top of it. It's nice to have stability again, but my job search is ongoing.
