That is very sad. I've never read an interview with Brian Blume. I would have liked to know his side of the TSR story. Nobody ever thinks they're "the bad guy".

OK, now I don't know if this is an April Fools joke or not...?
If so, that's messed up.

It wasn't an April Fools joke. Jim Ward mentioned it over on Facebook, too. Despite the acrimonious way they treated Gary, the Blumes were central to getting TSR started, and without them we might not have our beloved game today. And they were businessmen. So yeah, RIP.

Obituary from the funeral home which would indicate that this is in fact real. There will be a time, months from now and with some distance, to reflect on his role in gaming. For now our community should simply offer condolences to his family and friends.

Merged the threads from Boot Hill and from GD.
Generally, please respect the sensibility of the situation and do not make any comments on Blume's role in TSR based on what you have learned through hearsay. Especially if that hearsay is based on comments by people who were by no means in any position to know the inside dealings of the management at TSR.
Personally, I think Blume's role in the development of D&D is pretty noteworthy: After all, he was the one who hired Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weiss, and who created the "D&D más novel" business model that would go on to exist until the 2010s, and that is still the base for many of the brands that were created as spiritual successors to D&D, like Pathfinder. Blume's fingerprints on the hobby are certainly bigger than it might seem at first glance, and I would wish that he received the respect he rightfully deserves.

That is very sad. I've never read an interview with Brian Blume. I would have liked to know his side of the TSR story. Nobody ever thinks they're "the bad guy". Nor have I. I met him once, long ago, at the last GenCon I attended. He seemed a pretty nice fellow, but that's all the impression I took away from it.

That's a shame. I wouldn't wish that death on anyone, Lord have mercy.

Dang, this made me go look up Robin Williams' death. I had no idea--I thought he just struggled with crippling depression. Yeah, they found out after the autopsy (which I think they said is the only way they can diagnose it). It was pretty quiet news at the time. I think the bigger news was Internet trolls harassing his daughter, Zelda.

My thoughts are with his family. It is unfortunate we will never hear Brian's telling of events. @rafael's sentiments above are on the mark about Brian and should be celebrated.
