For those interested in pictures of underground facilities, Index.hu recently published a report about a large bunker complex under Budapest, built in 1951 for the comfort of communist scum the leadership of the Hungarian Workers' Party and their families in case of an atomic war (curious how the higher classes are so particular to their survival, even in such a very egalitarian society... ). The article is in Hungarian, but there are several pictures, a lot of which have the perfect atmosphere of a D&D or GW/Mutant Future dungeon, or a futuristic FPS. I highly recommend checking them out. Unfortunately, the bunker is not open for regulary visitors, and is in fact at an undisclosed location in the Budapest city centre (the reporters and other visitors had to sign a non-disclosure agreement). It is in an internal courtyard surrounded where all apartments are abandoned, and only accessible from the street level through another building block... of course, there are underground connections, to the Parliament, the 2nd metro line, and who knows where else. Maybe there are even communist morlocks or such down there. Anyway, it is the stuff of adventure.

Thanks, melan. That courtyard has given me a good idea.
Off now to pull out the notebook and start sketching and keying!

Seeing this brings me back to an idea I had earlier about castle defenses in a "D&D" world would probably resemble 20th century forts and defenses more than the medieval style. I say this because a D&D castle designer has to design defenses that take into account air power and heavy artillery plus gigantic beasties. Which would IMO lead the designers to structures more in common with the Maginot Line, Verdun, etc. I could even see where the structures could be so well camouflaged that you could almost walk across them without knowing it.

As it were, the forum regulars of the website needed only a few hours to figure out the exact address with a 99% probability, thanks to Google Maps a druid who had a bird fly over the town.

That is very cool. I'd love to visit something like that. Very "Half-Life" -ish and yeah, cool Mutant Future style rooms and such. Thanks for the link.
