The following passage is from Rhialto the Marvellous:
"The most pliable and cooperative of these creatures range from the lowly and frail elementals, through the sandestins. More fractious entities are known ... as 'daihak,' which include 'demons' and 'gods.' A magician's power derives from the abilities of the entities he is able to control. Every magician of consequence employes one or more sandestins."
This passage has been commonly read to mean that the lowest of the pliable entities are elementals, and that pliable entities increase in power ordinally up through sandestins.
However, this passage could alternately be read as indicating that only the most "lowly and frail" of the elementals are "pliable and cooperative"; stronger elementals might not be so readily controlled. This interpretation allows Vance to be slightly more compatible with 3LBBs as written, as elementals may still be the powerful fearsome creatures they are in the 3LBBs.
Just a thought.

Or: "lowly and frail" is a relative term. They may be weak compared to sandestine, demons, and gods, but very powerful compared to mortals.

I think of sandestins as djinn or efriit.
