Anyone have any information about William H. Stoddard's The Five Castles. It is an unofficial supplement to Dungeons and [sic] Dragons with illustrations by Linnea C. Cook. Published Dec. 19, 1976. There is a mention of Stoddard in PawT. increment?

I'm intrigued. Was it a campaign journal, houserule doc?

I'm intrigued. Was it a campaign journal, houserule doc? All I know is that is was 30 pages long, the copyright card says “sheets”, and the info above.

Nothing on Acaeum. I think I've got a lead on the author. Will post more soon.

Stoddard created a Poet and Cheshire Cat monster with levels that were published in A&E, though submitted by Nicolai Shapero's Notes for the Underground.
I may have more info soon, but want to confirm it before sharing.

Why don't you ask him about it? (Login required for that link.)

Why don't you ask him about it? (Login required for that link.) Already on it. The nice folks at Steve Jackson Games have forwarded an email to him for me. Do you know him?

I'm a member of that board and I read his posts all the time. I've been known to argue with him about D&D there. He's written many of the most highly regarded GURPS supplements.

Have been in touch with the author and exchanging emails with him, but currently dealing with some crunk time at work. He was an early player in the San Diego area. Some of his work appeared in A&E, but submitted through Nicolai Shapero who played in Berkley who had connections to groups in San Diego as well. He wrote the supplement over a Christmas break, with illustrations from his then girlfriend and passed it out to his friends. The supplement includes the Poet class (a bard-like class) as he felt there was a need for a class with Charisma as a prime requisite. He was first exposed to D&D at EquiCon, May 24-25, 1975, at the El Cortez Hotel in San Diego and was organized by John and Bjo Trimble (readers of A&E will recognize them). The supplement also includes a dual-class system, a human/elf-subrace, level limits for goblin and other monsters, an archer and paladin-archer subclass, and elf-lord class. Some tweaks to ability bonuses, plus a new ability scores. Weapon and armor damage rules. New monsters and magic items. And some other neat stuff. More to come.

Very interesting. I'd be curious to see if any one could dig up a copy. [ The author has a copy. He still owns the IP on this, so it is up to him if he wants to release it, and how. He’s GRUPS author now with a number of titles.

Yes, very interesting. I wonder what the new ability score was.
This also reminds me that I need to sit down and read through more of A&E. I'm familiar with Bjo through the Star Trek Concordance, and as a local legend in sci-fi fandom and the SCA, but didn't quite realize she was involved with D&D fandom as well.

And I barely ever buy anything! Of course he wouldn't make much, but it would be fun to know people are interested in such an early project. When you're done with this, Malchor, can you track down the authors of Simian Conquest?

He might not even need to handle it himself. There are several publishers with a reputable history of issuing old school reprints, and I'm sure this qualifies as significant enough to catch attention. The only possible catch I can think of is that WotC trademarks might need to be excised from the text.
