Before there was YouTube, there was community TV and The Chronic Rift. Check out this 1990s panel with Gary dialing in to talk about the state of RPGs in 1990. The panel also includes Greg Costikyan, game designer of Toon, Paranoia and d6 Star Wars. Greg was an SPI playtester, prominent in the Dippy scene and early player of D&D (circa 75?), writing about it and creating a zine. youtu.be/lkJul9DyLCI

Found it with a lucky search on archive.org looking for interviews with Gary or Dave. This was all found outside of the 60 Minutes piece. Checked YouTube figuringing it would be a better link to share.

Checked YouTube figuringing it would be a better link to share. Yeah, I've been reading a bit about them on their web page. They resurrected the show as a podcast and are still at it, 28 years later. By the way, I liked how, when asked how the game had changed since its beginnings, Gygax adamantly answered "not a bit!". This was in 1990, after he had been cast out of TSR, and shortly after the introduction of Second Edition. I don't think very many people (including Gygax) were thinking in terms of edition wars back then.

It is sometimes implied that only more recent players have any trouble with the organization of the LBBs. Clearly this was not the case with the first wave of players—Craig was one of them and even went on to become a game designer. Note that was “sometimes,” by some people. Not everyone.
