Either discussion or actual play, both are fine. I’ve listened to RFI and Save or Die/Save for Half but that’s about all I can dig up. Any others I should be listening to?

Chris Holmes (son of J. Eric Holmes) is on the latest episode of the Appendix N Book Club podcast discussing Burroughs' Tarzan at the Earth's Core, a cross-over with the Pellucidar series that his father wrote a sequel (Mahars of Pellucidar) to back in the '70s. Read more and find the link here: Chris Holmes guests on the Appendix N Book Club

delta and his friend Paul (of Paul's Game Blog) have a YouTube channel calling "Wandering DMs" - The format is essentially a podcast, the only video component is a webcam view of their faces.

So I'm not much of a podcast guy. Once in a while - usually while cooking - I'll listen to Drunks & Dragons or Dungeons & Dragons & Daughters (super cute) neither of which is OD&D. But I did just listen to Griff (Secrets of Blackmoor) in a really good podcast on traditional gaming HEREThe podcast is called RolePlay Rescue, and looks to be more B/X focused, but scanning through there are a number of episodes that look like they could be pretty interesting for folks like us.

Roleplay Rescue is indeed generally OSR but the presenter, Ché, is broadening the range of games he covers. As far as I know, he's not done much on OD&D.

I tried one or two episodes of some I've been recommended. I've never subscribed to any and don't currently listen to any of them.

I couldn’t find any either. So I started one. First episode is here: anchor.fm/dicebro. Emphasis on Od&d part, and less on the “worth listening to” part. Heh.

In episode 3 I struggle with the wilderness rules of Od&d’s volume 3. Caveat: I am not a voice actor. Just a regular Joe Shmuckatelly trying to figure out the nitty gritty aspects of running a game of Od&d by testing it out in solo fashion.

So, as always, you can run whatever way you like, but it doesn’t sound like you tried the wilderness encounter table to get your spider, since you only rolled once to get it. You could have gotten a spider in the mountain table by rolling an animal on a 5 out of a d8, and then a spider on a 1 on a d12. Characters don’t usually venture into the wilderness until they are up a bit in levels...

I may be able to take the time to see what happens to Doris today. Feel free to comment. I’m interested in this podcast stuff. Gonna get a how to book and work on getting better.

I enjoyed your podcasts, dicebro , particularly your campaign play reports. I pick and choose episodes from some of the others mentioned here, but I don't know of any others specific to OD&D. chicagowiz has his podcast where he has discussed OD&D in some of the episodes, also very good.

1st level characters have a rather dire life expectancy...it might have been interesting to throw in a reaction roll in your town encounter. Perhaps in some alternative narrative they would have turned out to be friends.

I failed to mention that I waived it because the “Cities” table roll fell on robbery by 1D4 thieves, urchins, etc. thank you for listening.

Thanks for putting it out there. Now I have an itch to roll a party of four or so and tackle a random dungeon generated by the charts in SR#1...
I was reminded by listening that the actual core mechanics of getting around, having and dodging encounters, and the like, amount to a pretty reasonable engine that runs as a game (or perhaps more accurately, as a generator of small skirmish war games), but needs some referee and player input to put a “why” to all of the happenings.

Yes, the “why” might be where we get some of the “imaginative play” aspect of the game. I don’t like the term “role play” given it’s origin in behavioral therapy circles.
there are some interesting tables that list “What the monsters are Doing” at the time of the encounter. These provide food for thought as to the context of the play.
thanks for input. This stuff is fun to do and discuss.
