The possibility of an annotated D&D was raised lately over here. Delving Deeper isn't the original, but it might be a passable substitute in some circumstances... one being if you happen to want an annotated text to look at. So here's a few (early draft) pages from the forthcoming Annotated Delving Deeper V5. As Oakes mentioned in the other thread, it's a question of: How far do you go?

Wow. That's a lot of work. The footnotes seem longer than the actual text! :-O

I love stuff like this waysoftheearth . I've been looking forward to the final annotated manuscript since you mentioned it to me a while back. Prior to the official PDF releases, DD was my favorite retroclone for integrating more Chainmail into the 3lbbs and staying faithful to the original text. FWIW, S&W Whitebox also was a favorite of mine mainly for its simplicity and "pick up and go" nature.

There isn’t one.
I had been (vaguely) working toward releasing all three volumes in one hit, but I’m thinking now it might be practical to go one volume at a time. There is still much to do; in the first instance I still have yet to circulate a draft for comment. None the less, it’s coming.

Percentage wise, how much of this do you have written?

Welcome dilvish. I don't have an exact percentage. DD5 is arranged in three booklets; Heroes & Magic, Delving & Exploration, and Monsters & Treasures. Of these, H&M is done, D&E is mostly done, and M&T is just getting started. "Done" means it's written and reviewed at least once, but there's work to do in production and final review.

I really hope you don't give up on this Delving Deeper V5 project. What you have written so far is really incredible. Get off your rear and finish this! This is going to be something really awesome when finished! It will be a lifetime accomplishment! Just imagine it in a hardcover or softcover single volume! Are you motivated yet! Go for it! Do it!
I also have about 10-20 unfinished projects that have been on the back burner. Some are getting close to 20 years old. Don't be like me!

Thanks eldradwolfsbane. DD5 is a massive undertaking. I haven't really stopped working on it, but it has slowed very considerably in the last few years due to "life's priorities". As it happens, in the last few weeks I have been reaching out to a few collaborators to help me kick it along. I am currently looking to set up a working group to assist with reviewing the DD5 material--including the annotations--and some of the broader development decisions. So, probably, this is a good time/place for anyone with a solid grounding in the OD&D lore, or a critical eye for spelling, grammar, typesetting, or detail to jump in and volunteer a bit of their time to help me get it done. I'd love to see "something" ready for the 10th anniversary of DD (which is late 2012). We'll see...

Hi! I'm new to all this, and I'm trying to understand what are the main differences between the annotated version and the non-annotated version. Are the annotations rules clarifications, context about why a rule is made like that, or just general explanations like why dwarfs is the correct spelling instead of dwarves? Also, is there a link to the newest version? I love the work you put in Delving Deeper, keep it up!
Edit: I'd also like to know, what are the V4 and V5 differences? I just don't have the time to read both of them, but I want to use V5 due to it being the newest DD.

I just want to say I have been running DD on the Immersive Ink since 2015. Simon basically thought about all the house rules/interpretations that DMs need to make, and made his own based on deep research. I decided to use his interpretations, and have been quite satisfied with the game set

Thanks makofan Welcome @buba. DD V5 with/without annotations are exactly the same game. The annotated version just has a bunch of footnotes that explain why everything is how it is, as explained in the foreword. In terms of changes to V5 since V4; V5 includes a "V4 house rules" appendix that captures the main rules differences. So, you could play V5 with all the V4 house rules, and you'd have virtually the same game. I say "virtually" because there are also a bunch of minor/subtle tweaks included in V5 that are too numerous to list, but that's why you get the annotated version. Be aware that V5 is not yet a complete game (it's still a work in progress), but you could certainly play a V5-based game with what's currently available from my fileshare. Enjoy!

I use ddo.immersiveink.com/ for my games, so at this juncture it is v4. I like the online set as my party and I can access them at any time from any device
