Well, I just got back from my first NTRPGCon. It was a lot of fun, mostly. I had 7 games over 5 days. That part was exhausting. NTRPGCon is officially "old school." But I learned that old school means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. (Quick background on me: played D&D as a kid with a kid's mind and didn't play again till I returned to the hobby 3 years ago. Found old school. Found you guys. Found my local Planet Eris group with austinjimm. So I returned to 0e old school and that is my main adult brain playing knowledge of D&D). Here is one of my take aways: rules don't matter. At least not for the players. The only thing that matters for the player is: is the ref good or not. And (probably more than) half of that is: do I have good chemistry with this ref. One person's good ref is another person's dull ref, etc. Rules are for the ref. If, as a ref, you just totally dig endless rules and minutiae for interp: awesome: there is old school rules heavy for you. Old school is not neceessarily rules lite. AD&D made my head ache with all its rules. I could never run that! I can't hold that much in my brain! Old school is also, apparently, not about sandbox, dungeon crawl. I participated in and witnessed several more "adventure based" games. The ref's were good -- really good. The stories were fascinating. But I found the approach constricting as a player and I can't see myself running a game that way. As a ref, I take delight in my players feeling like they have lots of options open. I take delight in seeing where they will lead things. Now, to a certain degree, at a convention, i can see why some things have to be a bit "railroaded." I suppose it is degrees of scale. Anyway, lots of fun and I learned a lot! Glad to have met some of you, finally!

Well, I just got back from my first NTRPGCon. .... Anyway, lots of fun and I learned a lot! Glad to have met some of you, finally! Great meeting you too, tetramorph! You are a cool dude and a terrific player. I really hope you attend again. At this point, I've attended Gary Con five times and NTRPG Con six times. I have found that my favorite games are run by entertaining referees and populated with fun players, that there's not much correlation between systems, necessarily, as long as its sorta/kinda old schoolish - OD&D/B/X/1E or a related clone. They can also be a little railroady (and still be fun) given the time constraint (a few hours) and unspoken player expectations (some exploration, a puzzle/trap and a battle, which is hard to ensure if there are too many choices), but better referees can find a way to still create some choice in the game. I will always prefer an ongoing home campaign with my preferred system and friends, but a good convention game can still be worth the time, especially if you're getting a chance to game with folks you don't normally get to see. I have met some awesome people and developed some of my best friendships at the conventions. Now I look forward to catching up with folks there as much as gaming. I'm sure that will be the case for you too, should you continue to attend. Thanks again for taking a chance on my adventure.

Also, bunch of pictures in a thread at K&KA. Apologies for the link away, but there are dozens of pics across multiple posts and it's a huge pain to copy it all over.

Hello tetramorph, it was nice meeting you and playing with you at this year's NTRPGCon.
As a group activity, I agree, the people matter much more than the activity/game.
The main thing for a DM is that he is competent/organized. So long as your DM is decent, I think the player quality becomes more important regarding the fun factor. A great group of players can really make a mediocre DM look good.
Rules matter insomuch that they strongly influence game-play. I ran 3 different game systems this Con, and the rules do have an impact on how the game plays out. The surprise and segment rules of AD&D does provide a nice level of crunch for those who like that sort of thing (sometimes I do, sometimes I don't).
One of the keys to enjoying Con games is knowing what kind of games & adventures you do and don't like. That's one of the reasons I started GMing some games, as you can run the exact kind of game you like. For every game you run, that's one less game slot you'll have to "roll the dice."
Chainsaw is right that what makes for a good campaign adventure may not work very well as a Con game, and vice versa. I learn something new every year I attend. Here's to you and the rest of us attending many more Cons to come!
