I like the idea of individual spells having multiple uses. An example of this can be seen in S&W Whitebox, which combined Haste and Slow into Alter Time. This allows for an economy of spell slots. Wizards have so few to begin with, so why not let individual spell slots go farther? So here is a look at Hold Portal, Knock, and Wizard Lock. My thinking here is to have the 1st level version of the spell affect only non-magical locks and doors, but the 2nd level version become a magical ward or seal. What do you think? How would you tweak or change this?
Alt Hold Portal, Knock, Wizard Lock:
Spell of Opening/Closure
Spell Level: Magic-user, 1st Level
Range: 60 ft
Duration: Immediate
This spell may be cast in one of two ways, which is determined by the magic user at the time this spell is cast:
Opening: When this spell is cast, any closed portals, doors, and gates designated by the magic user within the spell’s range are immediately opened. In addition, any closed treasure chests, boxes, and containers designated by the magic user are opened. If any portal or chest is locked with a non-magical lock, then it is immediately unlocked and then opened. Likewise, any gates are unbarred and opened.
Closure: When the spell is cast in reverse, any opened portals, doors, and gates designated by the magic user within the spell’s range are immediately closed. In addition, any open treasure chests, boxes, and containers designated by the magic user are closed. If any portal or chest is equipped with a non-magical lock, then it is immediately closed and then locked. Likewise, any gates are closed and barred.
Hold Portal
Spell Level: Magic-user, 2nd Level
Range: 10 ft
Duration: 2d6 turns
This spell may be cast in one of two ways, which is determined by the magic user at the time this spell is cast:
Hold Portal: This spell magically holds a single door or gate in position for the duration of the spell (or until dispelled). Creatures with magic resistance can shatter the spell without much effort. At the time this spell is cast, the magic-user may prepare the ward so that he or she may be allowed to open and close the door without disturbing the spell. However, if the spell is prepared in this way, then any other magic-user of the same level as the caster of the ward or higher may open and close the door or gate also, without disturbing the spell.
Counter Hold Portal: This reverse of this spell unlocks and unbars a single door or gate within its range. Such a casting will also counter another Hold Portal spell, or will suspend a permanent magical effect that holds or locks a door or gate for the duration of the spell.
