I have been digging this series called "The Expanse" on the SyFy channel. Classic sci-fi with mining of the Asteroid belt. I was turned on to it from the Citizens of the Imperium Traveller forum. I am watching the TV episodes and listening to the audio books by James S.A. Corey which if you read the wiki link is pseudonym of two collaborating writers. I hadn't heard about the novels until after watching the show, but I'll keep an eye out for them. I like the Tv series a lot; it's one of the few shows I make a point of watching (I'm still kicking myself for missing the first half of last night's show).
The universe (at least in the early novels) is actually close to my SF rpg setting, although I created my setting years before hearing about the books/series. There are several marked differences, of course.

I didn't know anything about the novels or TV series till yesterday. I don't have cable so the SyFy channel is a mystery to me. Looks like most of the episodes are up on youtube if you try a search.

I've enjoyed The Expanse immensely. It's no joke when I say each episode is better than the last. Easily the best new sci-fi (and Syfy) series in the past couple of years.

I love the show, too. Am I the only one who thought that as long as he had his hat, Miller sort of looked like a younger Tom Waits?

I've been a fan of the series since the first episode. Got the first book from Amazon a week later.
I myself have been puzzling how this would game out. Classic Traveller or Traveller 2300. I think it would work better with 2300 with the body types baked in.

I like the character generation in Traveller 2300, but the task resolution, not so much. Still, it's a good option. But for space combat, I use Starmada Compendium.

Ended up watching all the TV episodes last night. At times I think the directors lost focus, there were scenes that seemed unnecessary and slow paced. But they held my attention and I was sad when episode seven ended because I wanted more. Thank goodness for having the books and audio-books so I can continue with the story.

The TV show was a great production. Had it stayed closer to the book it would have been even better. Room for improvement in series 2.

Good stuff. I'm a Classic Traveller fan and it's nice to see SyFy putting some effort into a quasi-hard-sci-fi program. The channel has been so dire for years that I was totally unaware until I saw this thread — Otto Harkaman FTW!

I may use HERO or GURPS when recreating the setting.

I read book one a year or so ago and enjoyed it, but never bothered to track down the rest of the series. I've heard good things about the syfy tv series but havne't had a chance to watch any episodes yet. Guess I should track down more books...

Holden's crew in the book are just like a band of Classic Traveller characters. Just check out the scene where they're going over the Martian ship that's just become their "legitimate salvage".

That's what really struck me. It feels very much how I picture My Traveller Universe to be.

It seems pretty easy to write up the Expanse as a Traveller setting. The only change with characters would be to drop noble titles and laser weapons. Everything else would work out okay, although I doubt there would be a lot of swords in the campaign.
Spaceships would be non-starships. Missiles would be torpedoes, and turn lasers into railguns. Sandcasters can be turned into machine guns used to shoot down torpedoes. Railguns are short range, but can't be stopped by machine gun fire.
That's my take, anyway.

Not sure if anybody knows this, but The Expanse was originally written as a RPG/setting! There was so much information available after a bit that the decision was made to simply make them into novels, later a television series. But I hear it's going to it's roots as the original creator is making the RPG a kickstarter after all.

Personally, I would use SPI's Universe rules (along with the Delta Vee ship combat system), with mods, for this game.

Sorry, it might read as RPG setting, but I meant it was going to be an RPG itself. The setting just became novel-fodder before the game was written.

I'm about six episodes in and liking it so far. Cool show. I put off watching it since I don't watch a lot of TV but now I'm glad I started it.

I was talking to a friend about how I wish the show didn't have any of the scenes that took place on Earth. That really spoiled the mystery of the show as you knew, in advance, who the good guys were. Had all those scenes been removed, it would have done a better job getting the audience to relate to the plight of the belters as pawns between Earth and Mars. Also, they make such a big deal about the affects of low gravity on the belter's bone density, but they never show Earthers as being stronger than the belters.

Amos is from earth and manhandles martians and belters left and right. Holden is also from earth and though less violent than Amos is clearly shown as possessing a muscular physique.

I didn't realize Amos was from Earth. The character I'm thinking of is Miller's partner who just arrived from Earth yet he get's manhandled by four belters. Given Ceres' gravity, he should easily be able to pick all four of them up. That brings up another question I have which is why they don't use rotating space station instead of building on very light asteroids? The Tycho rotates. This would solve most of the health issues which are the main element of the conflict (of course, this would invalidate much of the show).

FWIW, I've grown to love the show, even if I never quite managed to connect with the books. 4th season was released today, and... Got to do paperwork, will watch on the other screen. Amos is my spirit animal.

I only watched the first two seasons. I kept missing episodes of the third season, then the series moved to Amazon (I think).
