Even though I'm a Holmes/3BB+Greyhawk kind of guy, I have always really dug the idea that all weapons and monsters HD are both generated with a D6.
So I'm curious, for those that like to include elements of Greyhawk in their OD&D games (or simply have an opinion on the matter), which way do you swing?

I include "elements" of Greyhawk, but that's just me, the DM. The players don't get any of it.
I use d6's for pretty much everything, except rolling to hit and rolling saves. Players don't need anything but d20 for those and d6s for the rest.
But I'm funny that way...

d6 - nice balance. Once monsters have d8, you start to get weapon/stat inflation and dogs and cats living together

Well that's a pretty clear message and is turning out pretty much as I would have expected. Thanks all!

D6 all the way...makes Fireball that much more deadly (for both sides).

I use elements of Greyhawk, but have never seriously considered using variable hit dice or weapon damage for OD&D.

Hmm, first d8 vote. I think it would be helpful if the poll separated Greyhawk hd for PCs with d6 for hit dice from pure 3LBB. If I use Greyhawk hd for PCs, I will also use d8 for monsters.

I'm actually using Holmes and d8 HD right now, but ultimately I do prefer the d6 method.

Just to be contrary, monster hit dice are D8s in my games. I think I'm more of a Greyhawk fan than many of the folks here. I don't use everything, and I tweak the heck out of it all, so it's not AD&D 1st Ed. by any stretch of the imagination.

As am I, which is mostly why I use Holmes as my base instead of the 3LB+Greyhawk. It has all the elements of OD&D already "installed" and the few parts of Greyhawk that I like as well in one convenient and (IMO) well written book. That said, I voted D6. I think much of the balance (ugh I hate using that word...) of having D6 weapons comes with having D6 HD. If i went with D8 HD, I'd have to use variable weapon damage. Plus I simply have a drawer full of D6's at my disposal, and only a few D8's.

Jimwise,
I seem to remember an early version of the Holmes Companion mentioning the use of D6s for monster hit dice, but I don't think it's in there, now. I guess you took that out (or am I imaging things)?

Jimwise, I seem to remember an early version of the Holmes Companion mentioning the use of D6s for monster hit dice, but I don't think it's in there, now. I guess you took that out (or am I imaging things)? You remember correctly! I removed it, once upon a time ago, so that there were less house rules in the document and more "pure-expansion". I've since changed my opinion on that, and as of 7/6/08, that rule variant is back in. Hey, it's a variant, people who use the HC (which still surprises me that anyone cared about my house rules!) can choose which pieces to use. I also altered the house rule on Two Weapons/Two-handed weapons based n your rule. I strongly prefer the idea! The only reason I went with roll 2/drop 1 for all two handed was for simplicity. Your variant remained simple and added a nice twist! Thank you!! ;D

But then I use a great deal from Greyhawk and consider it the only absolutely essential OD&D supplement.

Fighters get d8, magic-users and clerics get d6. Some monsters get d8 and some get d6. But I have at least 12 or so d8's. Also fighters with an 18 Constitution roll a 25% chance of getting a d10 for hit dice. Just think about that rare Conanesque character.
