Ok i just started my new od&d game and i really have two questions 1. how much hp does someone heal with rest and 2. how do you handle magic items... are they instanly known or does the character need someone to identify (i know this is a matter of opinion but i just wanted some old-school perspective on the matter).

1) see this thread: odd74.proboards76.com/index.cgi?board=menmagic&action=display&thread=10322) This really depends on how much time you have, or want to take. When he would run OD&D recently, Gary Gygax would automatically identify everything but potions, but he'd charge a lot for it. Potions still had to be tasted. There has to be some kind of "cost", whether strictly cash, or time, or the possibility of looking foolish. And whether you play that out or not is up to you. Personally, I like the idea of having a sage who can identify stuff for a (hefty) fee; it takes excess wealth out of the game. But I'd also allow people to try things and see what happens. (especially with weapons).

I don't know. My party keeps dying before they get to the magic items
