I would dearly love to own an original set. I have a spare set Xerxez (3LBBs plus supplements); PM me.

The mom and pop used book stores are closing here left and right, as well kenmeister.
ON a more positive note, table top gaming has made something of a resurgence in the Metro here, and I've seen some hobby shops that used to sell only board games and modeling supplies set up tables to attract D&D players and start carrying the newer D&D stuff.
The local library has a D&D night every week.
Every major city around the OKC Metro has either a gaming store or a comic book store that supports the D&D hobby. Wizards Asylum in Norman Oklahoma is pretty big for the college kids who game at OU, while Game Headquarters is doing fantastic in OKC. They are jampacked every night and carry a very large store of all new rpgs and a fair supply of old stuff on their used shelves.
I have very fond memories of some of the game shops that were in OKC when I was a kid. We'd walk a few miles to get the latest thing.
Buddy of mine goes to every swap meet, estate sale, or yard sale he can find in search of the books. He has found some rare items! And he has a very large collection by now and keeps them all very carefully.

xerxez, do you know Glen Halstrom (smokestackjones) formerly of the Save or Die podcast? He's from OK as well. You two should get together for a game some time.
Out here in cow country, the closest I have to a game store is the train hobby shop which just so happens to carry Warhammer40K miniatures and sets but nothing else related to role-playing. There is the Hasting's but that is hardly a gaming shop.
I just received the set I won on eBay. I am extremely pleased with it.
xerxez, your music is good. The vocalist reminds me of Morrison, Jim not Van. That would be you, correct? Will you be releasing more material? If so, when?

Angelicdoctor-thanks!
I have heard of Glenn Halstrom and as a matter of fact I believe he e-mailed me once about a Holmes blue book game ad I had put out on Meet-Up to attract players. This was like three years ago. Not positive but I seem to remember he told me he was the guy who did save or Die and I was like cool! I have listened to some of the podcasts and really liked them. That game never materialized for various reasons, though. Who knows, might meet him sometime!
It can be tough to be a gamer in a small town, I know some people who live in small towns around here and unless they want to shell out the gas money every week and drive a long way, its hard for some to get a game going. I have recently started a game in my home on Thursdays and two of my players drive about fifteen miles I think. Are you able to get a sizable group there?
Glad you like the sounds! Three of our band are avid gamers. We weren't tight at all on the recordings and have been redoing most of those songs but we were excited and wanted to get something going. We are preparing some new ones too but want to be shinier and well, better, before we let them out, maybe in a couple months we will be able to share. Yes, I'm the vocals and my son plays drums-it's really neat to be in that project with him. Most people who hear our music say I sound a bit like Jim and I will admit to being a Doors nut and that Jim's lyrical manner and the way he sang greatly influences my writing and singing without trying to mimic... but that makes for weird sometimes because our guitarists and bassist are very big Rainbow and Blackmore influenced and yet two of them also play in a red dirt country band as well!

I'm glad you got ahold of it, Angelicdoctor. I have the one digest set of OD&D rules that came out on lulu awhile back. <snip> Oklahoma City was a very thriving rpg market back in the 80's, gameshops were everywhere. As a result it is not uncommon to find old school games at used books stores and swap meets at very cool prices. Half Price Books is here and they have three stores in the Metro. They usually have nine shelves or more of the neatest stuff and I have seen many old school items on them, including a set of Dragon Quest. It was going for 80 bucks. Half price books does their homework online pretty good before pricing their stuff. But cheers to you, thats a nice Christmas present. HPB does their homework, but anything that sits on the shelf long enough will end up in the clearance section. They had 3 factory sealed boxes of the 1993 TSR cards (sets 1,2, and 3) and marked them for about $40 each and while novel, I wasn't going to really need/buy them; but I just bought them for $3 each out of the clearance section months later and will give a pack out to players at convention games to use the items and NPC patrons for a fun twist. If you live in California and just read this tip, I retract that statement and you should never look in the clearance section for RPGs/Games

Try being a gamer in a city of 12000 where there is no larger city within a 90 minute drive.
Thank God for Jim Lurvey, he's kept gaming alive in South Dakota virtually singlehandedly.
And I still have my first edition brown box OD&D that I bought from Gary in December of 1973 when I came home from college. Yep, before the official release date. It's autographed by Dave Arneson, too. Paul Stormberg's estimate is it's worth about $5000, but I ain't selling. I had to sell my 2nd Ed CHAINMAIL back in late 2009 in order to eat, and I still regret it. Selling it, that is, not eating.
But for gaming I use the two volume Lulu set. It's safer.

It's available on Lulu?
Out here in the country, my most reliable gaming group are the children in my own family. I have 8 of them plus my eldest is courting a young man who also joins in our regular sessions. So, no complaints. They are aged between 2 and 19 years so even when the older ones begin to leave the nest, I should have a regular gaming group for quite some time. Of course, the two year old isn't ready for anything other than role-playing without the dice at the moment, but everyone else is pretty much able to participate without too much guided assistance from me. So, my gaming life is pretty good presently.

It's All girls in the game now, but my son will join when able to do more than steal dice.

Well, I had to sell my set almost a year after I purchased it (hated to do so) and was recently checking out current eBay auctions. Wow. Just. Wow. And not just to OD&D sets. Seems most AD&D stuff has seen a dramatic increase in cost in last few years. Any thoughts as to why? Stranger Things influence? More Gen Xrs waking up to the fact that they miss the old game? There's no more RFI podcasts so I can't imagine any vehicle out there keeping the interest high... The entire catalog from TSR seems to be available on DriveThru for far cheaper, too...

Apparently they sell them that high because people are willing to pay that much. It's weird. I personally am content with a playable pdf print or POD. I feel for collectors of originals. They're getting older, rarer, and their target audience seems to be well to do mature guys with lots of spending money.

I use sniping software (yeah, I'm one of those jerks). I set it for the last second for what I'm willing to pay and forget it.
Sometimes I'm surprised when I get a You Won Now Pay notice. Most of the time I lose anyways because it's gotten too crazy.

Wow some serious thread necro here! I'm recently unemployed so liquidating some of my stash for instant bill $. Amazing what people will pay for the venerable version(s) of the game. Recently saw an auction for Moldvay Cook Basic & Expert boxed sets on FB with original dice in each of them (being auctioned together.) Within 24 hours that auction was up to $400! Heck I threw up an older Gamescience D30 that had already been inked/crayoned and it went for $54 on Ebay. Siply amazing, maybe some folks got that stimulus money and didn't need it for survival so maybe splurge a bit on classic gaming ephemera?

Yeah, sorry for the thread necro. I had been away from gaming for quite some time. Coming back into perhaps doing some collecting (at the least) I noted that the market for the old material hasn't remained what it was and I was quite shocked to learn just how ridiculous it has become. Instead of creating a new thread, I thought I'd just re-use this one. Consider that act of my conscientious 'green thumb'.

Because of the recent popularity of D&D , prices have skyrocketed. I used to collect and I had a pretty big inventory. I sold off most of my collection back in the mid 2Ks due to some financial issues. I'd probably make 10 times what I made then for many items. Some items have just gone completely through the roof (usually the piss poorest of content items- it's all about the rarity!). I have no real hope of getting back my old white box + supps or Runequest items unless I'm left an inheritance from a previously unknown rich relative or I win the Lotto. Just too much money for something I'd be afraid to actually use if I *did* manage to get it. Maybe I'll luck out like I did recently with my 1st Print Monster Manual (c.f. my "anniversary" thread)

Welcome back! No shame in your necro-game. I gave up being a regular collector due to the aforementioned craziness in the marketplace. I've got whatever I need for several centuries of gaming fun. The only problem now is finding living, breathing humans who are a) local and b) interested in playing.
